Not quite true. Tampa holds the dubious honour of being the first President's Trophy winner to be swept (zero wins) in the first round.
The next worst team was the 2012 Vancouver Canucks ( lost in five to LA). The others ( 1999 St Louis Blues, 2005 Detroit Red Wings, 2008 San Jose Sharks, 2009 Washington Capitals ) lost their series in seven.

That being said, the road to the Cup is now wide open with no overwhelming favorite.
The jolt comes when you factor in that TB didn't just edge the President's Trophy by a point or two courtesy of an easy schedule in a weak conference. They wreaked holy fucking havoc in a strong conference and won the Trophy by a just ridiculous margin of about 20 points..... only to fall like lambs to a wild card team.

They'll be analyzing that for a long while yet.

Did they just get soft and over-confident? Were they too skill-oriented to play grind and bump playoff hockey?

I've said this before. Regular season 6 month duration playing against every team. Playoffs play one team for max 7 games to advance. You see the difference? Hedman alone is a huge loss. Columbus also loaded up for the playoffs. Players they didn't have for most of the regular season.

The next best team (in the standings) Calgary faces elimination. This could come down to Washington repeating.

Firstly Leafs can play defense. They played a very controlled game. No turn overs. Killed 3 penalties. It's about making plays and on the 2nd goal a very controlled breakout under pressure. Hainsey to Matthews to Rielly to Johnson to Kapanen goal

Leafs looked very good tonight - your prediction may just come true.
Now this is a version of the Leafs I could live with and maybe even believe in. Hard, solid & patient game, under 30 shots against. If they could do this at least or 5 times in a series they're definitely alive in the conference. But can;t be just the odd game here & there.

Probably done tonight. I'm just picking up the game now. Watched game 4 having not seen the Flames since before the Christmas. Like the hustle but way, way to much depending on their goaltender. Game should have been 8:3 or 8:4 Colorado, Flames didn't look like a team that had any business being in first place of any division except may in German or Italian league , Is this really what got them to this point or have they fallen off somewhere??

The regular season a coach prepares his team to beat 30 other NHL teams over 6 months. The playoff...the coach prepares a game plan beat just 1 team for a series. The playoffs is start of a whole new season.

Thank you Mister Stats Man. There were no glaring turnovers ala the Holl, Oz, or Marincin kind. Or even the Gardner kind. You can consider dumping the puck in a turnover. The whole game they looked very controlled and methodical. Calm and making good plays. No real panic. Good positioning. The game could have gone either way. Matthews goal forced Boston to push it.

5 turnovers (these are forced turnovers) for the Leafs must be a record season low, given how they like to run and gun. Best and probably most complete game by the Leafs all year.

That was close, good thing it was Freddi in net instead of Andrew Raycroft...banish the thought.

For the Leafs to get beyond this series, AM has to continue to be the stick that stirs the drink. You can't ask for more from the Tavares line than what they've given. Zaitsev has to be commended for his defensive play, he's silencing his naysayers. The Leafs are playing Babcock hockey in the 3rd period and the Bruins are getting tired. This series cannot be allowed to go to seven games.

Losing Kadri was blessing in disguise. Can’t stand the guy.

sure 5 turn overs. you are right. is that what you wanted to hear? you can go to sleep feeling good now.
that wasn't the point. The point was Leafs played a controlled and smart game.

Gardner did throw one up between 2 Leafs onto a Bruins stick when pressured that resulted in a Marleau hooking penalty so we all know what Gardner is capable of. Could have caused a goal with the PP like Brown did the last game.

Agree on Zaitsev. Babcock hockey is get the lead and protect it in the 3rd. Very effective. Leafs have the scoring talent and they obviously know how to protect 3rd period leads. Now they have the horses as well with Muzzin. They went through their growing pains when MNM were rookies and every 3rd period lead they lost it seems.
That one was for glam f cause I was going to say they lost every lead rather than it seems.

I was wondering what happened to him. He used to make those obscene hand and arm gestures. Based on his name, he is probably a descendant of the million Franco Quebecers who emigrated to the eastern U.S. in the 1800's.
