Who cares about magic number. They can lose every game and still most likely make playoffs. These games now are meaningless.
Almost meaningless.
If Toronto went 0-5-0 in their remaining games, they'd still have a 98.6% chance of making the playoffs.

So time to rest Freddy or is it time for tune up for the playoffs. I'm a believer that nothing's written in stone until the games are played.
Play Freddy in the next game and rest for 3 games then play the last game to finish the regular season. Watch closely with game vs lightning.

That 1 year they missed the playoffs by 1 point and the Leafs made it, it was the 2016-2017 season, they haven't forgot. The lightning have something to prove, they will trash the Leafs any which way they can, even though the game is probably meaningless.

You’ve taken into account as you say that that the Leafs have played 13 games in March - 3 games against playoff teams and 10 games against non-playoff teams, and they have a losing record in March? Like, they’re not even at .500?
You forget to mention without Gardiner and Dermott. I was joking about Gardiner he's an important part of the Leafs, his good outweighs the bad. Playoffs a different season. And Leafs are 6-4-3 in March, that's .577 percent.

not always sure...

The Leafs have had fewer injuries than most other teams. But okay then, I hope Austin doesn’t run out of fingers for all the Stanley cup rings he’s gonna win when Gardiner comes back.

Fewer injuries but look how shitty our depth is on defence is (except for the 2 young rookies in the Marlies, they won't be called up).

You angry bro? Ok, maybe you like this? If it goes to game 7 and with Gardiner, Boston super line will salivating. Thanks for being a Leafs fan.

Playoffs you are playing against one team within a 2 week period to advance. Regular season playing against all teams in a 6 month period to win one of sixteen spots. Huge difference.

Granted I would say Tor is still huge underdog vs Boston but I think it will be close. 7 games again.

So I came across an idea to end tie hockey games without the dreaded shootout skills compitetion. After the 5 min OT, have have powerplay to win. There will be a coin flip, the team that wins the coin flip, decides if they want the 2min powerplay, if they score they win, if they don't score they lose. If penalty killing team scores shorthanded, they win.
Ok so now you are getting rediculous. You want to take away the shootout because too much luck. What is flipping a coin? Skill?

Ok instead of flipping a coin, the home team choses to go on the PP or not (home ice adavatage has to count for something). If your PK is like 88% then you have a good chance of winning. If you PP is like %15 then think about killing the PP instead. But hey, they flip a coin in the NFL, what the shit do I know.

They also don't have shootouts in the NFL. Perhaps they should. Shootout may be a gimmick but your PP/PK proposal is outright preposterous.

A role the Leafs will relesh, no pressure.
Better to be underdogs. You lose well you were never expected to win. As the favourite you win and ho hum no big deal. You lose and you choked big time.

The NFL has a coin toss in OT and in the playoffs.

You forget the idea of having a shootout back in the 90's in the NHL first sounded stupid, then they tested it in the AHL and now here we are.

Well, if you don't want to flip a coin you better try harder to win it before then.

What should happen is 3 point games. 3 for regulation win. 2 for ot win and 1 for ot loss. Doesn't make sense that some games are worth 2 points and some worth 3.

The history has already been skewed cause there were no 3 point games back in the day.
Some people think a .500 record based on points means you're an average team. 82 points in 82 games does not make for an average team. It makes for a below average team.

As a math person, the current set up bothers me. But they won't implement your idea at all.

The reason is because it hides how competitive teams are. It's fake.

It allows a Wins/Losses/OTL, which is wrong for a statistician. If you win in OT, it counts in the wins column. If you don't, you have a separate column. You still lost the game.

It makes it seem like you are above .500 or even when you truly aren't. It's bullshit. The general fan is not critical of these numbers and think their team is better than it is. It's bullshit parity.

Basketball is wins/losses and has the better playoff structure. Hockey has fucked around with this too much.
