Los Angeles got two of Toronto's very best prospects plus the draft pick, so it's really a good trade for both teams. Toronto short term and in L.A. you'll probably see both Grundstrom and Durzi playing within a year or two.
Of course it's short term vs long term. That's how it works. Leafs are ready to contend now. LA is close to last place. No sense for LA to keep their good players now and acquire more to take a run at getting out of last place.

Quite a bit to give up but I think Dubas wanted to make sure he didn't end up empty handed after the deadline. Giving up the FRP was inevitable. Gundstrom is a like a young Komarov but with better hands so he was the part I hated to relinquish. Durzi is a fringe prospect, passed over in his original draft year and playing as an overage junior which means the Leaf's weren't keen to sign him. And we still managed to hang on to Sandin and Liljegren.
Leafs may not need too, the Bruins are inline to play the Islanders and fall into the Metro playoff bracket.
I hear the Leafs are looking at bringing in another van Reimsdyk, that will be expensive.

After this season, the Maple Leafs have salary (cap) commitments of $60,275,699 (13 players already signed) for 2019-20
After next year, Toronto has cap commitments of $40,412,366 (7 players signed), for 2020-21.
After the next 2 seasons, Maple Leafs core will be mostly signed to long~term deals.
Zach Hyman and Freddie Andersen being the 2 biggest pieces to fit in the puzzle at that point.
When Kadri and Rielly signed their contracts no fuss and they were happy campers. Very good contracts. Nylander has got to show it in the playoffs. No excuses. He obviously considers himself an elite player on par with the likes of Pasternak, Goudreau, and Kucherov.

Overpaid? Nah, 1 round pick is late pick in very week draft. Grundstrom is grinder and the other kid isn't even signed. I could name 4 more Leaf prospects a head of those 2.
Any chance Mike is too stubborn to reduce Hainsey’s time enough to balance the top four pairing?
He has to play Muzzin. Ron should be bottom six with penalty minutes but my gut tells me Mike will try to keep playing his hard working tried and true.
This trade adds both elements of defence and grit that the Leafs sorely lack. Finally we have a d man who will actually hit and win physical battles along the boards. More grit are still needed, especially upfront but it's a step in the right direction. Big thumbs up for Dubas getting it done without touching the young core.
I think Muzzin will play with Reilly for heavy minutes. He may be the missing ingredient for the Leafs to fight power with power against the other teams' top lines. He may also be a very good mentor for Dermott.

As I see it our starting defense corps are: Gardiner, Rielly, Muzzin, Hainsey, Dermott and Zaitsev. Zaitsev is the only one who shoots right handed. I see the Leafs going after another right handed shooting D man. Parayko STL is interesting but would be cost prohibitive. I think like a guy like McQuaid NYR is an intriguing proposition. He hasn't played much the past two seasons but his cap hit is only $2.75M and he's a UFA. Likely would only cost us a 4th round pick at most. Listed as 6'4 and 210 and plays a physical defensive game. The other target is Brett Pesce CAR. He's not that physical but a capable D man. He's currently a +13 on a poor squad. Cap hit is $4M I believe. I don't know what his acquisition cost would be as he's only 24.
