I guess when you're trapped in an elevator you never have to piss?

I can't see why he wouldn't be a) discovered missing and b) the maintenance people wouldn't notice the elevator not working and c) security noticing him stuck in there. They obviously have a camera....

Also, aren't all elevators equipped with an emergency phone?

Don't they have a hatch in the roof behind the lights just for this purpose?

Something is really odd about this situation.....(other than the obvious)

The way he acted after getting out of the elevator almost sounds like a cautionary moral tale.

"White never went back to work at the magazine. Caught up in media attention (which he shunned but thrilled to), prodded by friends, and perhaps provoked by overly solicitous overtures from McGraw-Hill, White fell under the sway of renown and grievance, and then that of the legal establishment. He got a lawyer, and came to believe that returning to work might signal a degree of mental fitness detrimental to litigation. Instead, he spent eight weeks in Anguilla. Eventually, Business Week had to let him go. The lawsuit he filed, for twenty-five million dollars, against the building's management and the elevator-maintenance company, took four years. They settled for an amount that White is not allowed to disclose, but he will not contest that it was a low number, hardly six figures. He never learned why the elevator stopped; there was talk of a power dip, but nothing definite. Meanwhile, White no longer had his job, which he'd held for fifteen years, and lost all contact with his former colleagues. He lost his apartment, spent all his money, and searched, mostly in vain, for paying work. He is currently unemployed."

I guess this might explain a little more about it: http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080421/D906CFOO1.html

I'm still very skeptical though.
The weekend thing is new to me but still, 11 pm friday? I would have sued the security company too because they are supposed to patrol....

He said he got barely 6 figures from the settlement but how much is almost 2 days of your life worth due to negligence? (and that is exactly what this was).

1) If there was a phone and it either didn't work, or no one answered it?
2) If there was an alarm, and he pressed it, and no one responded?
3) There was obviously security cameras in the elevators, why wasn't someone manning them? Or if there was someone manning them, why didn't they respond?
4) If the malfunction was caused by shoddy maintenance, that comes with a HEFTY fine.
