The reason you were laughed at was because you were claiming that since more area was being covered by ice and snow the area was expanding, but what wasn't pointed out was that the volume of ice and snow was decreasing at an alarming rate. Much of the increased was because water had seeped into the base of ice mass and the ice flow were moving faster and farther as a result of less friction between the ground and the ice mass.
