Why not just ban nicotine in cigs and see how long it takes people to quite once there is no longer a physical addiction?

Maybe that would have an impact on the taste/flavour? Or maybe the cig companies know that no one would smoke their cancer sticks if they weren't addicted to them...

Nicotine is a naturally occurring alkaloid in the tobacco plant. To ban nicotine in cigarettes would involve chemically separating the drug from the rest of the plant.

While this is obviously do-able from a scientific perspective, it would clearly be expensive. The process of nicotine separation could also conceivably introduce other chemical by-products to the cigarette depending on the method use to extract nicotine.

Actually, to get technical, cigs do have a purpose, like alcohol, colas, and other assorted chemicals.

There are alternatives to cars, ie: electric buses (oops they discontinued those), street cars, subways, and diesel buses.

I realize there has been much talk about second hand smoke and the health risks associated but again, I will bring up the argument: put one subcompact car, or a motorcryle for that matter, in a garage with 1 person for 1 hour, and that person will die. Put 20 smokers in the same room and while they may be green, they will be alive.

I will support anti smoking campaigns and fight for the ban of tobacco producets when they address the more dangerous pollutants.

That is one of the most ludicrous arguments I have ever seen, comparing a few smokers to a machine used for transportation.

It is not that the exhaust from an engine is more toxic, it simply has much more exhaust than 1 smoker or 20 smokers. In the garage, with a car running, people succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning, again, it is related to its concentration, not a matter of it being more dangerous. CO is not a carcinogen. I am sure that if you could fill the same garage with the same concentration of smoke as an engine would emit before it kills someone, you would achieve the same end result, death

Next time, try making a realistic comparison.

You proved my point! A car produces much more toxic chemicals in an hour than 20 smokers! And it is a perfect analogy: Both produce airborne pollutants, both are optional, both are major causes of death.

You contradicted yourself when you said "it simply has much more exhaust than 1 smoker or 20 smokers" when something produces a dramatically larger amount of toxins, THAT makes it more dangerous.

I have no problems with people killing themselves for recreation (especially if the rest of us don't have to pay to save them at the end of their lives) but I do think that second hand smoke is irresponsible and that smoking should be banned in public places (work, school, bars.....).

Uh, so what purpose do cigs serve?

Cars will be dealt with as soon as we're finished stamping out smoking. And it doesn't really matter whether you support it or not. It's a fait accompli - some smokers just haven't realized that yet...

I remember a time when alcohol wasn't politically correct and now its smoking. Remember when you used to watch Mike Douglas and Walter Cronkite smoking on air?

As for second hand smoke, yup, its dangerous, so is driving a car, motorcycle, atv, jet ski, etc. All I'm saying is that smoking isn't any more, or less dangerous or harmful to the environment that a lot of other activities. It has become politcally incorrect.

I am wondering if anyone here remembers back in the day when doctors actually PRESCRIBED smoking as a means of stress relief? Now there's a thought!! *shudder*

No they're not. People who use them just like to think they are.

Trying lighting up a joint at work and see what happens. The same thing if you tried to light up a smoke. And cigars just make you smell and look OLD.

I think that they are. I do not use them and I do not smoke.
