I'm not new to the City or to the TTC, but using the TTC for getting to work is a relatively new requirement for me and I've never relied on it following a major winter storm.

For those who are seasoned users of the TTC, what can be expected on Wednesday morning service-wise if the snow hits as expected? The west end of the Bloor-Danforth line has several above-ground sections and I transfer to a bus route.

Delays, lots of extra crowding, slush everywhere, climbing through snowbanks to get the bus. Leave home an hoir early, and eat a good breakfast before you do.

Good luck!

I don't think anyone can give you an accurate assesment as it will depend on which snow plows are out, how many possible accidents there might be on a particular route etc. A few years ago, even the subway service was affected as the trains had to travel over open tracks in some areas and switches were ice and snow covered, disabling train service for some time.

I think it might be safe to give yourself an extra half hour if punctuality is important.

As a side note, I couldn't use the word t r a v e r s e for some reason. Not sure what the BB thought I was trying to say?

lol i'm sure the TTC will be a treat if the storm hits as expected. The impacts on the bus routes are pretty obvious, but i've never paid attention to the subway service during big snowstorms.

Thanks for the replies...sounds like a good day to work from home!

Expect delays and in fact, expect to maybe to not even be able to make it home via the TTC. It just depends on how quickly the snow accumulates as to whether the tracks will be usable and whether buses will be able to run. I have been in both situations where the subway has not run past the Bloor station due to snow on the tracks as well as where a bus route has shut down because the buses could not make it up the hill. It just depends whether they can keep up clearing the tracks and plowing the roads. Bring some cash in case you need to take alternate transportation.

I don't understand why people in Canada get so freaked out when it snows. My mom and grandma are the same way. My grandma told me the other day that she wouldn't go out shopping with my mom because it was snowing in Hamilton. Even though Hamilton is more than 2 1/2 hours drive away!!!!!! COME ON PEOPLE.... We live in the Great WHITE North.... It snows here in the winter. DEAL WITH IT!!!!!

People in the ROC do not get freaked out. Only people in Toronto.

During the "call in the army" snow storm, I drove to work every day. The only difference was that finding parking at work was easier because most people here do now really understand how to drive in winter weather.

Bah, when I was a kid I used to walk to school 10 miles both ways uphill though 15 feet of snow while fighting off zombies and the vampires, and back then we didn't have any slayers to help us out either. It was rough I tell ya, no respect.

10-15 cm tomorrow overnight, is the current forecast (~1cm tomorrow morning and evening).
Should not cause a problem at all.. but then, this *is* the TTC we're talking about!

I always love it when peole begin to laugh about the Army being called out back when. If I remember, the city got 80 cm or ~60% of it's historical total seasonal fall in less than 2 weeks. How often has that happened. The call out gave us 1200 extra workers who won't bitch about overtime or rant, 'not my job'.

Funny thing: buddy of mine was doing some military training last year. They closed down the training facility when they got.. 10cm of snow!

People also overlook the fact, that because of the Army, many people made it to the emergency room only because the army was called in.

If your point is to ridicule the army, you fall short. There are people in the Ottawa Valley and the Eastern townships that owe so much to the Canadian army.

I think you get overly defensive in some cases, Rock. I took it to be a juxtaposition of the army being called in to help Toronto, but having the sense to shut down manoeuvres when faced with a similar situation themselves.
