Denwa,

I hope like hell you're wrong my friend. Hang in there. The mayor of Detroit was just on the phone and said that things were as good as they could be under the circumstances. You need to get somebody to your grandmother, that's for sure.

Good luck to you..

and Scarey - Don't you know we've already invaded - and won? Just look at your tv programs, or turn on the radio, or check out the shelves at the record store. We've taken over your country without a single shot fired.

DenWa - I wouldn't worry too much about your parents. I think things are a little different and although there may be some odd stuff going on here or there, I think for the most part, everyone will just go with the flow.

As for your grandmother, you've probably already thought about the obvious of who to try to call, friends, etc. Another idea may be to try the American Red Cross. See if they have any idea of any local agencies that may be able to assist you.

Short of calling the police switchboard, that's all I can think of.

In 1812.....we turned back US forces..and by gumpshun we can do it again!!!........things have not changed that much.....where there is a will there is a way......we have a formidable navy....strong ground forces.....and a prime minister that has been in power four times longer then your president.......and that makes him four times more wily..........and our guy won't let go until the very end......trust me on this..he really won't go..like at all....and he's been asked quite a bit......I'm hearing it starting already in the news......US saying it started in Ottawa.....and we saying it started in NEW YORK.........I smell an invasion..
Yes Scarey,

We are really concerned. It's come to our attention that your entire armed forces is about the same size as our Coast Guard. Do you see a potential problem here?..:)

Lightning strike on the Niagra plant according to the Canadian Prime Ministers office is said to be the source of the problem.

DenWa,

This may be way too late, but from what I heard, the freeways had been quite clear starting at around 8pm or even a bit earlier, so if your parents were getting out of the city to the burbs, they probably go out fine. Detroit isn't burning, but there are pockets of idiots looting here and there, that will always happen in Detroit, let alone any major U.S. city. I do hope your family is okay, at a time like this it's always nice to know.

And EBS, our Prime Minister is an idiot, there was no lightning strike, just another situation of him trying to pass the buck, not sure that Mother Nature is the one to pass the buck to. It's a short term power failure, it will pass, and we'll have our comfortable A/C working and our computers back on, and Terbites everywhere will be whacking off to some internet porn in no time. Lucky for me, I was once a ludite, still have a stash of porno mags just for such an occasion.......always be prepared, I say. Oh, and DenWa, sorry for talking about whacking off in the same post as talking about your family.........at least it wasn't in the same paragraph though.

Anyway, time for me to sleep in my cool A/C with all my power, I love it.

Coolguy.

Power came on here, just north of Toronto at 4 am - it's pathetic to hear of all the cross-border finger pointing as to who is to blame.

Pallydin said:
While that may be true, the same cannot be said of everyone working at the PMO or the Canadian government. For instance, they now say the root might be a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvannia:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm.../20030815/wl_canada_nm/canada_power_cause_col

Now, the article says the US grid operators dismissed such a cause, but then a following paragraph gives one reason to consider it.....

"Canadian Defense Minister John McCallum said on Thursday night the U.S. military had advised him the outage at the nuclear plant did not involve an act of terrorism or sabotage. The Defense minister offered scant information, saying he had few details."

Now you have to ask yourself why the US military was phoning our representatives about only one of *four* nuclear plants that went down in the US if it were not somewhat focal to why things have happened? I sometimes don't have much faith in the US military but even *I* don't think they'd go out of their way to assure us about something for no reason at all.....maybe avoid telling us something important, but not go out of their way for nothing.

Well, Bush has called for an FBI investigation so this should all be very interesting by the end.... :D

PAL
Actually Pallydin,

There were 9 nuclear plants in the US, all of which shut down automatically due to the outage. I have no particular concern that our Military talked to yours. Seems to me a failure of the software that controls the grid, failed to isolate the failure and allowed it to propogate. I'm not big on conspiracy theories and frankly don't care whose fault it was.

Red,

That's true. But the other mode of failure here is that the fault should have never caused such a widespread outage. The software is designed to isolate the fault, not allow it to spread. That is what has everyone baffled and is probably the cause for the confusion about where the problem originated.

Back in Novenber 1965, the culprit of the blackout was Ontario hydro. If I remeber correctly, it was due to the malfunction of a microwave device, which resulted in the tripping a transmission line (near the Beck Station in Niagara Fall), and the eventual blackout of the whole easern sea board.

This time, nobody knows the answer for sure yet, but the following is an excerpt from an article by AP:

"The preliminary investigation focused on an electrical transmission loop that encircles Lake Erie. No one was sure where the blackout was triggered, although investigators have been intrigued by a series of interruptions on five power lines in the Cleveland area during the hour before the massive blackout began.

Two minutes after the last of the Cleveland-area line problems there were "power swings noted in Canada and the eastern U.S.," said a document made public late Friday by the North America Electric Reliability Council.

But the document cautioned, "It's not clear if these events caused the (wider blackout) or were a consequence of other events."
