In light of the Chara non-suspension hit, many major corporate sponsors threaten to pull out of the of the NHL, Air Canada and Via Rail all issued letters to the NHL. Now if Molson who just signed a huge deal with the NHL pulls out too, it could be the end of Gary Bettman and it would be good thing too. He had an unrealistic vision for the NHL and should be replaced.

We'll see how long he stays if he losses revenue from major corporate sponsors.
...or they will have to make changes to appease the sponsors and save the revenues.

Key words here: just signed a huge deal. They can't pull out. That's why they sign deals. Its a commitment by both parties. Same with VIA and Air Canada. The deal is done. There is a term. I don't know what it is, but chances are by the time the deals expire, this whole thing will have morphed into something entirely different. The companies are expressing their displeasure. That's all it means. And Bettman isn't going anywhere.

Air Canada and Via ... major sponsors ?

Sponsors certainly, but major I am not so sure. I really do not know, but I do not believe either are major sponsors of the NHL.

The CTV Centre, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, is sounding better and better.

They have deals, so they can't pull out. They are not major sponsors anyway. I heard Air Canada is $2M. Bettman couldn't care less and he said as much when asked what he thought about Air Canada's letter. As Don Cherry said on Coaches Corner last night... These companies should be ashamed of themselves. They are exploiting the situation to cow tow to the Montreal fans. Disgusting!!

I suppose you have seen the contracts and know that there are no escape clauses?

Any contract can be broken.

Air Canada is a major sponsor of all 6 Canadian teams, as is Via Rail.

It would be the Rogers Centre (Arena, Place, Forum, etc), not CTV.

As much as I wish they would, because after their latest actions, I wish them nothing but misfortune, Air Canada and Via Rail will not pull their sponsorship of the NHL. They want to be, in fact probably need to be associated with Canada's game. That's why all this bluster, especially from Air Canada, annoys me. They know they're not going to pull their sponsorship, but they want to make it look like they're upset so that they can pander to the Montreal/Quebec customer base. And Via Rail.... well what a joke that company is! Me too! Me too! Montreal based hypocrites... the both of them.

Yeah ... ummm ... why would it be Rogers whatever ?

There is already a Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario. Home of MLB's Toronto Blue Jays.
There is also a Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC where the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL play.

As to the sponsor part, like you posted, major to the Canadian teams, minor in the NHL overall.

Air Canada can be replaced by WestJet.
Via ? The teams do not travel by train any more so any other company can replace them.

Neither one will pull out. They are just being loyal to the city where their head office is located. The Air Canada/NHL is mutually beneficial, and I believe it is too beneficial for Aie Canada to walk away from. Both shouldup and stik to running their transportation businesses. Is VIA profitable or are we supporting it?

Air Canada puts in 2mill and Via puts in about 1.5 not majpr sponsor compared to Molson.
Peter Lorre,er, um, I mean Garry Bettman, isn't going anywhere considering how much money he makes for the owners and how much money he saved them in the last CBA.

Exactly, unless you guys have read the terms and conditions of both contracts and are lawyers, never say never, you're just speculating at best. How do you know Bettman doesn't have a performance clause or that the sponsors have an option to terminate based on certain conditions not being met?? Then there's the matter of contractural law whereby good lawyers can make anyone escape San Quentin.

One thing everyone seems to be forgetting........Bettmen is a lawyer....and a dam good one. I mean just look at his arrogance.
If he was forced out, trust me, he would have a nice soft parachute to make his landing that much softer.

Don Cherry is a senile racist......who is as predictable as the sunrise! He purposely didn't pronounce MaxPac's name and then calls his injury a "headache"? Go fuck urself Cherry.......u belong on Laffs TV not the CBC!

It'll be fun to watch him when the Laffs don't make the playoffs and the Bruins choke themselves outta the first round.....then he'll be forced to watch the Habs and sound like the real idiot he is!

I don't know if Cherry is a racist or not, but if you are going to attack him, why not attack him on the substance of what he is saying, rather than simply resorting to name calling. Ok... now we know how you feel about him. Now tell us why you think he is wrong in suggesting that Air Canada and Via Rail should be ashamed of themselves.

Air Canada and Via Rail knew what this game was like ever since they started their sponsorship years ago. If anything, the game is less violent today than it was when they started their sponsorship. So why are they getting upset now? Why weren't they upset with Gill, as a Canadien, did exactly the same thing to a New York Islander player (whose name I forget right now), last year. I'll tell you why.. because to these companies, this has nothing to do with player safety. They just want to ride public opinion to gain greater revenues in their home market. They are exploiting MaxPac's injury for thier own selfish reasons. That's why they should be ashamed.
