I think it will become common place and yes, I believe AI will replace a human companion.

Most people are lonely and feed off of emotions. AI will meet that and more. There are a lot of people who have long distance relationships and it is all based on emotions and feelings. From a physical perspective it will take time, but I can see it happening as technology grows by leaps and bounds. Even now, there are multiple sex toys and devices to get people off, so we are already using non human touch to feel good.

Something I have learned over time - never say never. It is more accurate to say 'when'.

There is no reason to doubt that an android cannot replicate every biological function including warmth and touch.

I worked with someone on prototypes for sex toys... its a bit challenging to implement. We were pretty green back then ...at first we tried servos to be encased in rubber. Then we tried magnets and thermistors to control when they are energized, we tried air with a pic controller and solenoids etc etc.. making it happen wasn't impossible, but we simply didn't feel it was worth going deep into Because nothing was big enough to challenge a flesh light.

I do see it being huge in the future.

Edit: I do hope the industry blows up. While the majority who are against seem to have a bias, I feel it would be a step in the right direction. Everyone seemed to have this stigma against buying porn and the industry, but OF and many others like it changed the game.

That was the first thought that came to my mind - was the feeling of them. AI can and is increasingly recognizing and responding to emotion, but it’s the actual material of them I wonder about and their ability to respond physically in real time. (Their ability to feel and sentience is a whole other issue, albeit related to this one)

@rex_baner brings up a good point because my next thought was that they’d be like an enhanced fleshlight, a fleshlight you can talk with lol. How realistic feeling is a fleshlight, though? I honestly have no idea. While I’m sure there’s a great number of people who turn to them instead of SPs, I wonder how many people here would opt for the experience of a fleshlight instead of a SP. Robots can be human like, but I don’t think they’ll ever be human, at least I hope they never are. The thought of a day when they are or are completely replacing humans absolutely terrifies me.

For what it’s worth, I’m not against them but I don’t think they’ll eradicate SPs as it stands. And while it’s possible for AI technology to get to a point where they could, I don’t think that’s an area of AI technology that should be explored to begin with ethically speaking cause it’s a real slippery slope.
