RIP Gary.
Saw them at the Montreal Forum in 1974 I think it was. Opening for the Who. Who were doing their boring Quadrophenia tour. I really didn't want to go, but a buddy who was a die hard Who fan insisted on buying me a ticket. When Lynrd Skynrd came on I was thinking, "shit. 45 minutes of boredom before the real boredom starts"
Within seconds, I was startled by how great they were. So good. So tight. I didn't want them to leave. I left without knowing who they were. I was like that in those days. A few months later I heard them on the radio doing "They call me the breeze" by JJ Cale. I instantly recognized them. Bought their first two albums and was a respectful fan from that point on. Great band.

Here's a great live version of Freebird on The Old Grey Whistle Test from 1975

These guys were a big influence on me as a guitar player. Absolutely solid band with great musicianship all around. A pivital moment in my life was learning the Free Bird guitar solo. This is really sad news. :( I hope they are still planning on Touring this summer. I was looking forward their show with ZZ Top.
