Very helpful Captain, glad you made a massive profit on the price action today.

Of the 3 big box home reno retailers, Lowes is the best. Home Depot is in the middle, and Rona is at the bottom.

That said, if you break it down by categories, it's all over the place.

Rona is the best for lumber, heavy structural stuff, and knowledge of staff with respect to heavy structure by far. Rona is also best for lumber.

Rona is at the bottom for electrical and plumbing.

Rona very very much depends on which store you go to. Belfield and Martin Grove is fantastic and Dundas and Royal York is very good. Better than any Lowes or Home Depot (both are former Lansing buildalls). Rona Stock yards is shit all round - disorganised, dirty, dickheads working there, stuff not neat, never anyone there.

HD is very convenient for me and I know where everything is.

HD is also best for tools by far.

Lowes carries the best names, more diverse offerings and stores are the cleanest. Lowes also offers the best promotions, with Rona second and HD almost nothing.

HD return policy is generous to say the least. They seldom give you a hard time returning things. If you don't have the receipt, they scan your credit card and know that you bought it there, or they will give you a store credit.

The thing is with Rona, many of their stores are too small, or were old Lansings that got converted to Ronas maybe 10 years ago or so. I don't know how this is going to work. Fo example, the Rona on Dundas at Royal York is ancient, but has a great lumber yard. Way too small to be converted to a Lowes and the lot is too small to do a tear down and rebuild. I can only guess it will be shuttered, or maybe sold off.

They sell hammers there right? The point was (insert hammer) you and I both know they were a crap company big bet on real estate etc. totally a takeout target. Been watching daily for months. I got paid. Too many folks dreaming in technicolour, opinions don't matter especially from the uninformed. This was a one day trade on a crap company run by Quebec robbers anyone who didn't make at least 50K on this has no business commenting. You either made the call or you didn't. BTW this is not @JC more the others pontificating that something that has come and gone has...gone.
I thought it was too risky, to be perfectly frank. Sometimes the best investment is one you don't make, other times you look like an ass. In this case I am an ass.

The take over at Rona was rumored in Quebec ( Montreal ) for the last 18 months. The reason for this was the abrupt change of governments. There will be no opposition to this take over from the Liberal government in power in Quebec today. There may be some grumblings from P i e r r e Karl Peladeau ( leader of the separatist opposition ) but that just looks like sour grapes to most people. Rona looks like a badly run operation out side of Quebec because it is badly run. Inside Quebec it is way ahead of Home Depot.

A strategy that I use is to follow what the big institutional funds are buying. If they are buying, it is to hold long term. Usually very conservative and safe bets. If institutions like the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan or the Caisse de Depot ( Quebec pension fund management organization ) is buying you know it is a safe long term bet. In this case the Caisse de Depot has a substancial holding in Rona.

I agree... so many times I would go to Rona to support Canadian and I would be met with them being totally out of stock or partially out of stock of what I was looking for, so I would have to go to HD anyways.
Finally decided to streamline and just go straight to HD.
It was a shame.
100% agree.

I only pop into home reno places maybe once/twice a year. Small stuff needed. The closest reno place is a Rona, so i'd stop in there. Not only is it messier than an HD or Lowes, but out of stock. One time, all I needed were a bunch of matching door stoppers. They had a few. Then headed to another Rona, none. That grimy wooden slot for it there. The shelf label is there. How hard is it to stock door stoppers?

Now I go to HD as it's the next closest place. Never had an out of stock.

Not sure how Rona compares to Lowes as I've only been there once.

This is a big move, i'm going to miss Rona, losing Canadian companies...
No issue for me. I find American big box stores much better than a Canadian counterpart. Interestingly, Canadian chains have the advantage of longer legacy, better locations that are already built and established. Yet, they fail against most US big wig chains even though the are new, start with fewer locations and sometimes have to go out of their way to build a new store from the ground up.

I'd rather take:

- Walmart
- Costco
- Home Depot
- TJX stores (Mardshalls, Winners, Home Sense)
- Subway
- Starbucks

Over.....

- Zellers or Giant Tiger
- Loblaws Wholesale Club
- Rona
- Liquidation World
- Mr. Sub
- Tim Hortons

Not I agree with for strategy. The portfolio of big funds is quite often no more than a reflection of the TSX index. In the case of the Caisse they are even heavily weighted to Quebec based stocks like Jean Contu and Rona.

I do not mirror what the big institutions do, because the institutions like Teachers PP and the Caisse are conservative long term buyers. I use their picks as a guide. Large positions in institution picks are safe to very safe. An example would be TRP, some of the big institutions have internal rules that they must keep very safe positions like TRP at pre determined minimum levels. Should they have to take some off the table to realize a profit, they must buy back at the next opportune time. They also will buy calls on priority core stocks like TRP.

Rona was a quality stock but not on the quality level of TRP. It was speculation that kept the stock popular, especially when there was a previous take over attempt. The ousting of Pauline Marois was also a catalyst for speculation.
