You said every day you delay you loose a day of benefits which is wrong.
Not true unless he is unemployed for a LONG time.

Let's say he qualifies for 34 weeks of benefits, then finds a job after 20 weeks. How many weeks of benefits does he get paid in this case?

If he files immedialy he gets his first payment after 4 weeks, and they would run through to week 38. However he finds a job in week 20 so he receives only 16 weeks of benefits--they stop paying you once you get a job.

If he waits a week to file he gets his first payment after 5 weeks, now the benefits will run from week 5 to week 39, but since he still found a job at week 16, now he only gets 15 weeks of benefits.

Only if he is unemployed for so long that he runs out of benefits without finding a job does he wind up getting the same payment either way--and I imagine none of us wish that on him.

BTW what makes you think I'm asian, you racist fuck?

Your EI claims clock starts as soon as you become unemployed.

Most people will get some termination pay of at least a couple of weeks.

There is a waiting period of 2 weeks on top of any termination and severance pay.

Let's say the termination pay is 2 weeks.
You are eligible to collect after 4 weeks.
If you apply immediately, you will fill out a report every 2 weeks.
If you apply after 2 week, you will fill out 1 report and then 1 every 2 weeks.
If you apply after 4 weeks, you will fill out 2 reports and then 1 every 2 weeks.
As long as you apply within the limit (4 weeks?), the period for which you will be paid will not change regardless of when you apply.
Your first payment might come sooner if you apply sooner but it will be for the exact same time period.

It's just like how you have 3 weeks to file any subsequent reports.
Obviously filing the report as soon as allowed rather than 2 or 3 weeks later will get you the money quicker but it will be for the same time period regardless.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Been there before.

Like some of the others have said, take a few days to unwind and reassess your situation. It might turn out to be a hidden blessing. You might even come to the realization that you need a career change.

Get together with some buddies for beers. This is when you know who your real friends are.

Seek legal help if you think you need it.

If budget permits, see an SP.

Listen to a motivational tape to change your state of mind. Tony Robbins calls it reframing.

Hang tough.

Kudos to the members who have posted on this thread for their thoughtfulness and generosity. There is some honour among scoundrels. Me included. :D

Congradulations gramage.

You've just been blooded, welcome to the working world.

Apart from the tips already given don't allow your self-esteem to erode. Getting laid off happens to even the most industrious among us so you are no different. Sure finding a new job is a full time job, keeping a positive attitude and staying physically fit is as well. Don't allow self pity to get the best of you or else you'll remain unemployed for a long time.

Good luck.

Nah, I still like the people there for the most part. Ans while the SP suggestion is also great I don't have the money saved (the other lesson from this.)

Thank you guys so much for the support/advice. It really means a lot.

My job was store manager for a large coffee chain. Was with them total just short of 5 years moving up (had been in that role about 6 months).

Took yesterday to freak out (although the good advice kept that to a minimum, thanks again) now it rebuild the resume, call them for some more info on this EAP that they told me about (wasn't in a state for asking at the time) and find the next stop.

Mind if I ask why you were let go? Just curious.

I've been fired as a computer programmer, and it took a while for me to get over the shock. But believe me, life gets better and you will get over it. Now is an opportunity for you to evaluate what you really want in life and go after it. Good luck.
