Hey all

I want to develop a product that I would like to ideally manufacture overseas in ie. China etc.

I was wondering if you guys can guide me as to where to look and how to get a product launched or even developed? I have thought of a concept and don't have any prototype but looking to get the design and functionality done.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

If you want the product scrutinized first you can always submit the idea to Quirky (but you don't get all the income from it's development), otherwise find a product promotion company (many are scams) or a patent lawyer....I once worked on an invention and couldn't get it to market as it had 4 parts (ie molds) and I needed to get it down to 3 in order to be cost effective (ie sell at the right price point)....it was an interesting exercise in creative thinking and frustration, as I feel it would have been successful (still nothing like on the market and this was 20 years ago).

In China? lmao

Good luck, those fucks will steal your idea and have it out to market before you can say "boo!".

Fucking assholes. People then wonder why they're not overly liked.

I used to help a Norwegian company develop a compost bucket . Ended up finding an Indian manufacturer way cheaper than Chinese. But chinese tend to make higher quality stuff. Depending a product you can probably find suppliers on Alibaba.

Not true, create a patent, pay some people off, if you're chinese you have a higher chance of doing this with finding the right people, if not good luck.

If you have a patent, ( and if it is a good idea ) you can just sit back and license the item out. Or sue people that use your patent without your agreement. On the other han if your idea is a pet rock II, then any fool can take the idea and run with it.

Not knowing the specifics of the idea or the product, I would assume that the US is the largest market. If that is the case then your best bang for buck is to do an initial filing yourself for a US patent, the initial filing date serves as the reference data if someone else tries to do patent the same idea. I believe you have 3 years to finish the US patent from the initial filing date. Once you do an initial filing, the idea is considered as public knowledge, I think you have another 3 years to file a patent in other countries.

The initial filing you can do yourself in some half assed manner, the final patent application should be done with care and probably by a professional.

You need big bucks to defend a patent, and big bucks to file a world wide patent. A patent is not a vehicle for generating money, it serves mostly to mitigate the risk of a very successful product being ripped off, now if you product is not very successful then having a patent or not is about equivalent.

What I would do is try to do as much work on the product myself, if I need to get others involved then I would do an initial US patent filing then get others involved, from that point I have 3 years to make money off the idea so to pay someone to finish the patent application and file for patents in other countries.

If the product is labor intensive then you will have to get it made in a 3rd world country like China/India, if the value of the product is primarily based on the materials; aluminium, steel, silver, etc.... then get it made locally as commodity prices for materials is the same everywhere. If the product is heavy then, you have to decide if the shipping costs from overseas + associated risks and headaches is worth it vs locally made.

For product development, I have no advice. I develop my own products, I once worked with a company in Tiawan to get my product made, it took a year of me drawing pictures to get the product into a state ready for production. For stuff like electronics, everything is regimented, structured and streamlined, I just send them CAD files and a parts list and they know how to handle the rest. Outside of electronics in which things are not as structured and regimented then you will have to talk them in which case things will move at a snails pace due to the language barrier and when it does move it is often in the wrong direction.

I have to guess that this 'product' is sex-related since you're asking the Escort Review Board for advice. Maybe something for hobbyists for when the new anti-prostitution laws kick in.
Have you considered Kickstarter or Indiegogo to crowdfund your product to see if there is any actual interest in it and raise some money for development? I'm no expert but maybe you should utilize an online resource that's not primarily set up to advertise sex workers and agencies.

Nah man! This is the best place to do it and it is the lounge. Many of the guys on here do not actually still hobby and we all have many interesting discussions on other topics then just the sex ones. Some people who come on here are quite brilliant and sometimes it takes the one person to exchange an idea or offer their comment.

BTW...this is not just an escort review board. Do you really think it would be this interesting or so many of us would keep coming back to exchange if we just kept discussing escorts. Nah man, this place is where like minded people meet and exchange ideas on everyone and everything. It is quite refreshing sometimes.

Although I agree that this is not the main source to do it but there is noting wrong to try here and it could result in an interesting discussion.

Yes, you might be wise to make a prototype before sinking money into full scale production.
Why not make a 3-d prototype here: http://3dphacktory.com

Forget about China. Lots of production is heading to Mexico now.

People are always on the lookout for ideas to steal so patenting is a no brainer.

I remember when my Dad was training apprentices at the Refinery, a guy from Chesterton came and took all the notes down.

In no time at all, all the notes and diagrams were part of Chestertons product manuals.

Also remember not all products are successful and as many said, the Chinese will have a copy out in no time.

Might be best to go low volume initially until you get a feel for the market.

It depends on the product. They might get away with it the first time, but the advantage lies in being responsive to the market (so newer versions) and customer service.

If it's a good product, people still prefer to talk to a North American for warranty service.
