A couple places in the South part, but the main stop was to be in Barcelona for 5-6 days.

As for Barcelona, of course see the Gaudi buildings and Parc Guell.

Casa Batllo is a beautiful Gaudi building and hosts different parties that are open to the general public. This year's "Magical Nights" series features soul, jazz, flamenco, rumba concerts on the rooftop.

Find the best tickets/guided tour you can afford for La Sagrada Famiglia. It is even more spectacular when you learn more about it. If that kind of thing interests you, do some advance reading or YouTube on it and you will appreciate it more!

The Mercat de la Boquiera is like our St Lawrence Market, but even better! About the only market that I've been to that can compare is the Riga Central Market which is housed in 3 WW2 Airship Hangars.

I try to eat lunch there as many days as I can!

The Gothic Quarter is very nice to meander.

You have to do the Las Ramblas stroll but it's a bit much. Cool bird cages with birds for sale are something special.

Also, the beach in Barcelona is packed with hot women!

Another less touristy place just outside of Barca is a beach town called Sitges. It is known as a gay place but don't let that dissuade you. It is not flaming at all and there is a super good vibe there! One thing that is interesing is that the outdoor cafe chairs are oriented towards the street so you can people watch on the Paseo.

Ask of you have any questions.

Hmmm…. I’ll be in Spain this September.

I just gave you some tips for the summer, particularly for the Starlite Festival as I'm thinking of going. All the other tips are good for September.

I wonder to what degree the citizens of Barcelona are simply xenophobic? Every country in the world is struggling with inflation, the high cost of living, etc. The causes of this are multiple and complex.

Blaming all of one’s problems on tourists sounds suspiciously similar to fascists’ blaming Jews, Muslims, and immigrants for their problems; except this time the target is foreigners/tourists.

Catalans are a bit different than Spanish de Espana people. They have a bit of an elitist attitude but they are great, welcoming people in my experience.

I think that these protests are being blown out of proportion because they make good clickbait headlines. I imagine the group is actually small.

The protesters are indeed relatively small - only about 2800 or so according to google. But many residents are frustrated with high cost of living. Sadly, tourists are being used as scapegoats. Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Boston, London, Berlin, Shanghai and several major cities are all very expensive. And not all of them are inundated with tourists

Probably because they see where this is going.

A lot of people in Europe don't want their home areas to become "exhibits". You could even argue they were not even designed for heavy tourism.

Hawaii residents aren't happy about the amount of tourism either.
I guess they don't realize how much Hawaii needs tourism and the tax revenue it generates.
There has been talk of Hawaii charging a "tourist tax" to be charged at the airport or hotel.
Yes. Definitely felt a bit uncomfortable there. Saw a documentary about the locals' resentment to being taken over. One girl was saying that Oahu is basically a toilet. Got the vibe that it isn't the carefree paradise as advertised. One beach in Maui there was a wooden shelter with a concrete floor with picnic tables set up. No haoles. (whiteys) Just a bunch of kind of scary Hawaiian guys hanging around looking poor and unemployed. Gave them a wide berth.

I've been to Oahu more times than I can remember.
Like most big cities homelessness is a huge problem. Cost of living their is high.
I've never had issues when I've been their. But not going to deny it, crime is a big problem. Where isn't it a problem these days?
I feel safer their than I do in downtown Toronto.
Attitude towards tourist has always been there but got worse during and after Covid. During Covid Hawaii pretty much told people to stay away we don't want you here(understandable). They enjoyed uncrowded beaches, roads and how quiet in general it was. It's a love hate relationship they have with tourists.
Yes they love the tax revenue, busy restaurants and the jobs tourism creates. But hate the crowds and all that comes with it.

Lisbon in Portugal is currently at the same level as Barcelona.

I have working colleague in the US that go to Lisbon to get their teeth fixed. The trip including the dentist is less than the prime they would have to pay in the US.

Rich people all over America and Europe are buying units. Bringing their prices up. Portugese are pissed..

Some are, but the dentists and the hookers aren’t all pissed.

They are earning more than if the wealthy North Americans and Europeans (the British and French go their more for the hookers than the dentists) weren’t spending those dollars.

A stunning number of Portuguese earn the minimum wage, according to reports on the local escort/john board. A country needs to import what it doesn’t have. If that is money, it is money. Can’t import money without catering to wealthier tourists and expats. Beautiful country. Never figured out why it has always been a poor country. Maybe just land size, but the United Kingdom is a stunning world power for being a small island in the middle of nowhere.

British needed to conquer the world to get away from their women and food. Portuguese only needed to get away from their women cuz their food is edible. That’s my theory anyway.

The hypocrisy in this thread is astounding. Replace the word "tourist" with "immigrant" and ask yourself if you still feel the same way.
immigrants don't leave and drain the public purse. Tourist's go back home.

Interesting theory. Here is mine. We can be guest high school teachers for a day and see how the school reacts.

The only places I can think of that the Portuguese conquered, Brazil and Macau, are now sex capitals.

The English, Spanish and Portuguese ships sailed off.

The English ships came back first. It had gold, corn for people and cows, and spices from the New Worlds.

The Spanish ships came back next. It had sugar, cotton, coffee, and burrito recipes from the New Worlds (they drifted a bit south of the English ships).

It was assumed the the Portuguese ships were lost. But lo and behold, they show back up with smiling guys who brought back smiling Brazilian and Asian girls. The Portuguese king said where the fuck are my riches? The Portuguese sailors said they are right here. Wait till you try anal with one of these Brazilian chicks with the big firm butt and slim waist, and these Asian chicks will do whatever you want.

The Portuguese went on to live poorer but happier lives than the English and Spanish.

The End.

So in the case of Barcelona, the impact is similar to immigration here. Not the same, but similar.
absolutely. its the same thing. Rich western countries have a limit on immigration or tourist they can handle.
