Close to 100 libraries across the city will be closed Monday as public library workers take to the picket lines.
Members of CUPE Local 4948 walked off the job at 5 p.m. after a marathon negotiating session with the Toronto Public Library Board failed to produce a tentative agreement.
"Despite our best attempts and numerous extensions to the deadline negotiations have stalled," Local 4948 President Maureen O'Reilly told reporters. "If we want to protect library workers and the world class services they provide we are left with no other choice but to take job action."
CUPE Local 4948 was in a legal strike position at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, but chose to remain at the table in the hopes of reaching a negotiated settlement.
Though some progress was made O'Reilly said the two sides continue to be far apart on the key issue of job security.
"The job security issue is a major one for us and the employer's proposals make over half our bargaining unit vulnerable to layoffs and job cuts and having just lost 107 positions we believe library workers will continue to be laid off in great numbers and as a result of that branches will close," she said.
As long as the library workers are on strike all 98 public library branches in Toronto will be closed and all bookmobile and home delivery services will be suspended. Anyone who currently has items on loan from the library are being told to hold on to them until the strike is resolved. No late fees will be charged.
During a news conference Sunday evening Coun. Paul Ainslie, chair of the Toronto Public Library Board, said he is still hopeful a deal can be done soon.
"We have made a number of concessions that we thought were acceptable to the union, but it turns out that wasn't the case," he said. "That said we are still prepared to have serious discussions this evening. There is seven hours left in the day and we want to negotiate."
CUPE 4948 has been without a contract since midnight on Dec 31.
