Exactly the 2 types of players Leafs don't have and need.
O'Reilly could very well play 3rd line center but they are also missing a top 6 winger.
Leafs 3rd and 4th lines have always been weak in the playoffs.
Both Boston and TB have formidable 3rd lines and even 4th lines for that matter.
Acciari is listed at 209 lbs and has a whopping 168 hits this season. That's the10th highest hit count in the League.
His 10 goals 8 assists is comparable to Engvall but Engvall listed at 214 lbs has only 39 hits.
Aston-Reese is Leafs big hitter and he only has 112 hits.
Both O'Reilly and Acciari are also good at faceoffs.

Foligno was a dud because he was injured.
At the time he was precisely the type of player Leafs needed.
This trade was not just for O'Rielly. They also got Acciari.
Most likely TB will also make a trade to load up. Perhaps Boston also.

You would be complaining if Leafs didn't make a trade.

O'Reilly is prone to injury too but that comes with the type of game he plays, heavy and laying out the body. I don't think Boston wants to disrupt the locker room chemistry so they won't make any major moves.

Based on previous accomplishments this looks like a great trade, assuming O’Rielly is still the same player he was when the Blues won the cup. To those who think this is a great trade, have you watched him play much this season ? I haven’t and so I asked. I‘m just concerned with his stats this year. He’s a -24 player on a team that’s going to miss the playoffs. Shouldn’t that be a red flag ?

I would have liked this trade a lot better if they had traded for the equivalent players on defence. O’Rielly does have the reputation as being one of the best two way clutch players so maybe he can contribute enough to improve the team defence if he hasn’t lost that ability yet.

The key part of the deal is that the Leafs add 2 players to the lineup who should contribute positively without giving a player up...the draft picks, etc mean nothing to a team going for it now.

This also allows Kyle to make additional moves before the trade deadline so he might not be finished tinkering yet.

Maybe we can get Drew Doughty and Erik Karrlson.

O'Rielly is actually not a big hitter. Foligno I don't think was prone to injury when Leafs got him. Just so happens he was damaged goods or what appears to be damaged goods. It didn't look like he was healthy when the Leafs got him and got injured after the trade. O'Rielly could already be injured or damaged goods. If that's the case then certainly bad trade but Leafs are trading for a player they think can do the job this playoffs.

O'Rielly has 13 hits in 40 games
Matthews has 61 hits in 48 games
Marner has 47 hits in 55 games
Nylander has 14 hits in 55 games
So O'Rielly hits pretty much same as Nylander

I like Acciari better, could be the better player in the deal.
Acciari alone would not have required a 1st round pick. Probably only a second. O'Rielly has won the Conn Smythe. That must count for something but obviously one can't expect that version since it was a few years ago. He's still only 32. Not like he's over the hill.

From PensionPlanPuppets:
" If you dig into the numbers, specifically his deployment and on-ice results, the Blues have been using ROR in the defensive zone significantly more than when they were winning. This is a result of the team bringing in young scoring talent that needs to be sheltered more than O’Reilly’s line could normally take. That, along with an .874 save percentage at 5v5 from Binnington and Griess"

If it turns out to be the 32nd pick then it's worth it.
Some people think all first round picks are equal. There's a huge difference between top 5 first round and late first round.
Same people don't understand the go for it window and the build window.
It's not like Leafs are trading their 1st pick every year. They didn't last year. Only one other year when they won the Canadian Division.
Once Matthews and Nylander contracts end and if one or both jump ship then they can build again with draft picks.
Winning a round would probably be considered a success. That's how low the bar is.

For some reason I tend to think O'Reilly (crazy Irishman) is similar to Patrice "Leaf Killer" Bergeron (another crazy Irishman).
