sorry, a defense lawyer. i was astounded by how insensitive and ignorant most lawyers are to mental health issues.

I'm quite familiar with mental health issues:) . Yet I'm not a lawyer. One place you could try in the Toronto area is arch legal services. These lawyers specialize in clients with mental health issues who for the most part also have learning disabilities as well.

I also heard that Baker law firm also in Toronto is good with mental health issues.

I hope this helps. Your 100% correct that most lawyers have very little knowledge when it comes to mental health issues.

At the very least these two firms that I just linked will give you a good sense of direction. Both these law firms are very definitely mental health friendly. Good luck with everything.

Yikes - I guess you can skip that one...

I'm not sure if Baker Law does criminal matters, but you could try them... if they don't do criminal, they should be able to refer you a criminal lawyer who understands your circumstances.

As for Hicks Block Adams, I dated a law clerk who worked there a few years ago. She said the lawyers were pretty good, and they generated a lot of their income from legal aid cases.

It's worth a shot contacting them, since they won't view your case as worthless just because you get legal aid.

If it doesn't work out with them - keep trying. From my own experience with civil litigation, you have to find someone you can trust since a lot is at stake

You might want to talk to the referral service of the Law Society of Upper Canada http://www.lsuc.on.ca/index_en.html, a lot of firms do pro bono work and your case sounds like it might well be one someone would be interested in taking.

You might also want to talk to one of the legal clinics at the law schools in Toronto (although summer isn't the best of times for this).

Perhaps Perry or Michaelzzzzz have more focused advice for someone in Toronto.

Also Squash's advice is doubtless quite good, although not a member of the Bar he definitely knows more about this area of the law in Toronto than I.

Best wishes, and I sincerely mean that JimmyDean.

Look up Edward Kelly or Michael Leopold. Both are quite familiar with mental health issues.

Steer clear of Hicks, Block, Adams and Derstine Penman. They're the McD's of the Toronto defence bar. They pay their associates crap.
