Was recently on this system. I spoke to this girl who told me confidentially that she was hired by Lavalife to purposely send messages to guys so they would use up more time by responding.

I wouldn't look past Lavalife to do this. So simple and effective.
Some consumer advocate show like W-5 should do an undercover expose on this.

I thought the same of this site ashleymadison.com when hot looking girls sent me collect messages, but most of the average girls say they're not interested (7's who think they're 9's).

I must admit that thought had crossed my mind because i constantly get smiles and collect calls from girls up to 1000 miles away from me. I've gotten some from local girls and then their profiles disappear a week later. Anyway, it wouldn't surprise me if they were legitimate girls just seeing if they could get some dumb guys to waste their credits.

Just a suggestion

Don't waste credits on sending IMs. I was on site for a while, and you send an IM and wait for a reply. Suddenly she responds just as your time ran out, so you use up more credits to respond, then she says she has to get back to work or go to bed. Poof she's gone.

I would use the emails, and if she is worth pursuing, each subsequent email is free.

I don't think it is necessarily a conspiracy. These sites operate under the business model that encourages you to buy credits and as such, they do not deny that they may hire people to impersonate genuine members to encourage the use of credits by other members. In the case of ashleymadison.com they justify it as enhancing the experience for the members. The quote from their site is as follows:
Online Hosts
From time to time this service may include, offer or initiate messages or instant chat from Online Hosts posing as attached or single men or women seeking "Cyber Affairs or Erotic Chat" for fetish and fantasy purposes only. Accordingly, any written statements made by Online Hosts are provided as "entertainment" for the purpose of enhancing user's personal online experience. For this reason, you agree that Online Hosts will NOT be conspicuously identified and Profiles advertising themselves as seeking "Cyber Affairs or Erotic Chat" may or may not be genuine

AshleyMadison calls them "webhosts" or something to that effect. If you check the site they say that you can have erotic chat with the webhosts for entertainment purposes.

Edit: gamesman, you must have made your post when I was composing mine. Anyway, at least AshleyMadison is upfront about it.

Lavalife promotes meeting people for casual dating and long term relationships.
There's something wrong about stringing along some guy when he's looking for more than just a quickie.
I think I may just fire off an email to one of the news agencies in the city.

I am not even convinced that the pictures you see of women, the actual women even knows it is there. They could buy 1000 pics from some model-search agency, and put up 1000 profiles. You could pay 5 people to send messages from them all.

Something like this would be par for the course in the business world IMHO. I worked for a large company where we'd use yahoo and hotmail accounts to post positive comments on some of the products we came out with on public message review boards. Basically like the bogus reviews you'll see here or on any message board.

Something like that does not surprise me at all. The key is to inform people who are less aware of such tactics.

I for one didn't know about these tactics but after a while it did occur to me. I just wish that lavalife would make it clearer. Its probably in the user agreement but who actually reads those carefully??!

I oined one of those chat lines a few years ago, and found that just as my time was running out, someome interesting(hot) would message me. After renewing, they had disappeared. Just more scamming for business.
