I also worked with someone who had the procedure done and they actually over corrected his eyes. He was far sighted before the operation and then he was near sighted lol....they fixed him up but they had to wait for him to heal properly and totally before correcting the mistake.
I think it all depends on how bad your 'script is. For eg: my contact lens' are 8.25 diopters in each eye, which causes problems with my now needed reading glasses for up close, and if I were to wear glasses they'd be about 3/8" thick each. I talked to my eye doc about lasik and told him: if I could correct my eyes so that I could wear thinner len's or just so I could "see" without putting in my contacts, that'd work for me.
If I were to get it done, and I've also heard that it doesn't last forever, if I could get 5 or 10 years out of it, I'd say it's money well spent. If you just factor in the cost of nice glasses ($200.00) and the lens being replaced every couple of years, you're talking a grand or so just for glasses.
A determing factor too is how stable are your eyes? If you need to update your 'script every couple of years, your eyes are still changing. If (like me) they haven't changed in 10 yrs or so, you'll probably see better results.
My advice is talk to your eye doc, he has no interest either way other than to make sure you make an informed decision (unless of course he sells glasses as well).
