I'm leaning towards the HP even though it's $50 more...same specs but added Bluetooth. Great price for Centrino processor.

HP $799

Toshiba $749

I'm not too familiar with Toshiba but I've read and heard that HP's customer service is horrible.

It's a toss up, both are good.
Depends if you need blue tooth?
If you can, go listen to how the speakers sound. Some laptops don't sound that great.

Plus HP gives you 64 bit Vista which means you should get a free upgrade to 64 bit Windows 7, if they do in Canada what they are doing in the States.
A 64 bit OS is nice. After using 64 bit Ubuntu I won't go back to 32 bit. 64 bit is faster.

IMHO, I'd pick Toshiba if it was was 64 bit Vista, otherwise HP is a better choice ..... depending how the speakers sound.

djk makes a good point if you use/rely on phone tech support.
HP tech support is bad, I've used them!
I have a Toshiba laptop and tech support is much better the few times I've used them.

I suspect you're probably looking for bang for your buck.

If you don't mind spending a bit more, you may want to check out Lenovo.

I own a X200 Thinkpad. The build quality is solid and the keyboard is phenomenal. The only negative is the speaker. They're not as good as other brands if you're looking to watch movies, listen to music. They're acceptable for system notifications, Outlook alerts, etc.

Some coupons: http://coupons.redflagdeals.com/i.php/all/Lenovo.com/

Sound sucks on the HP and is better on the Toshiba

Both are good but you need to be looking at the processor and not the name.

Agreed. Have had my Lenovo SL500 for about 4 months and love it (although some slam it as a poor man's Thinkpad). Has HDMI out for hookup to HD TV and supports 1080P. Also has bluetooth.

Both have similar sound (average) and the same T6500 Centrino processor. You get Windows 7 disc when released in Oct.

Yeah sound varies widely on laptops now. You have to listen to them because some still have crappy speakers.
