I can't tell you how much of a turn off this is. IMO, it demonstrates a complete lack of class and social refinement.

Never ask for a tip.
A tip is something that is given.
A tip is not something that is asked for.
Of course there are times when a tip is very appropriate (restaurants) and some people do not tip or tip very little.
Then it would be quite acceptable to enlighten the cheap idiot(s) in a polite way.
Asking for a tip is extremely crass and rude.
