issues, issues,

Canada has a long history of dealing with a province that has considered separation. The Canadian approach has been quixotic, opposing independence for Quebec, exactly as Serbia opposes independence for Kosovo.

Quebeckers, like Kosovars, have maintained, it's entirely up to them - what anyone else says is irrelevant.

But beyond this, there are some tremendous differences. Politicians promoted ethnic hatred, and the former leader of Yugoslavia, the war criminal Milosovic dramatically reduced the status of the region of Kosovo around 1990.

There were then two separate votes in Kosovo for independence and the independence movement won handily - the last one, in 1992, by around 98% in favour.

After the wars with Croatia and Bosnia, ethnic tensions again were on the rise as Milosovic continued to play the ethnic tensions card.

Hostile actions from both sides triggered all out war, and NATO intervened.

That was less than 10 years ago. Is it surprising that the independence movement remains incredibly strong?

Still, international pressure on Kosovo saw the Kosovars at the table negotiating with the Serbs to define their status now in the new Serb Republic.

Those talks have broken down. And Kosovo has decided, unsurprisingly, to go it alone. This will undoubtedly fuel "nationalist" furvor in Serbia. And this in turn has given Russia the opportunity to pander to their Serbian friends.

Been there, its a great place with wonderful people. Serbia no longer oppresses them! If it takes another cold war to allow people to be free, so be it.

...
Except Quebec has never asked for independence; only a fraction of the people there have wanted their own country.

It's About Time

Kosovo has the support of George W.Bush. He received a hero's welcome back in August and he will be remember for eternity. Europe did nothing to help resolve this ongoing conflict but America is one great country. Second to this if you want to know where the U.S. has the biggest army base outside of America it is in Kosovo. Great things will result from seperating from this slavic country.

I suppose someone should have informed the "Fort Dix Six" terror plotters of this.

basketcase,

I'd hardly call the results of the last referendum a "fraction."

More to the point, even amongst those Quebeckers opposed to an independent Quebec, the majority of them still maintain it's up to Quebeckers and Quebeckers only.

It's going to amaze some people but Kosovo getting independance means absolutely nothing to me. I'm sure Kosovorians(?) love it but I simply don't give a shit. What exactly is Kosovo going to contribute to the world? BTW where the f**k is Kosovo anyway?

And they should have a movie called Independence Day with a hot redhead MILF (i.e. Margaret Colin) wearing short business skirts and showing lots of leg! :D

I'm not ignorant. I have the knowledge re: Kosovo, Macedonia, 90's, Serbia, and former Yugoslavia. I am not an idiot. I just care about MY country. I care about Canada. That's it. Period. What happens in an armpit a**hole region like Kosovo bothers me not. I especially despise all the morons in Ottawa, Toronto, and anywhere else in this country who fly Kosovo (or any other country - Lebanon from last year comes to mind) flags or dance around Parliament protesting whatever. I mean if you are soooooooo thrilled about Kosovo independance THEN GO F**KING LIVE THERE!!!!!!!! You are in Canada you ungrateful pieces of crap. Fly the Canadian flag!!! Dance around the Canadian flag. The only thing I'd use another country's flag for is maybe wiping my butt after a big s**t.

Are you inbred or something? There are a lot of people on this forum that take a dim view of multiculturalism and the idea of a global community, but you're definitely alone in your extreme position.

Lame. Shall we all also hold hands and sing We Are The World? I love my country first! If that makes me un-multicultural or un-global community or too extreme minded then. . . . so be it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's not clear whether Canada will recognize Kosovo independence. Canada may wait for UN recognition so as not to set a precedent that unilateral separation without international support has legs. The C's have said they are "considering" what to do. They may recognize it like their pals in the US, or they may not.

(Think about Quebec, the federal govt. certainly is.)

The same things it's been contributing for the past 10 years.

There will be an extra border and customs office for the sex slaves & heroine shipments to clear - but since many of the customs officers figure to be related to the traffickers, there's not likely to be any glitch the flow of either comodity.
