The problem though is how we define "luxuries" and "hard labour." I have no idea about the conditions of our prisons, but the inmates basically have free housing, all their meals taken care of, heat and air conditioning, and a relatively comfortable bed.
To me 'luxury' is a TV, movies, newspapers, so get rid of those. Maybe a Bible or a classic novel like Moby Dick for reading material. No education (mind you, self-improvement perhaps is a rehabilitative thing).

Fuck the gym. Moe the lawn, cut weeds, bust rocks, clean garbage, remove snow, etc. That's your exercise.

It is clearly pathetic to kill these people. With a prison population of more than 2,300,000 in the US, don't tell me that they cannot find room for another 50.

No education, hmm. So you want them to come out as dumb as they went in. Pretty well guaranteeing recidivism.

It costs a lot of taxpayers money to keep someone in prison for life. Especially if they have to stay segregated from the rest of the prison population, no doubt in excess of $100,000 per year hardly a good way to spend tax dollers considering the inmate is contributing absolutely nothing to society while in prison. The French developed the guillotine so those sentenced to death would not suffer.

But, it would make us feel smugly morally superior to lesser nations.

Yes and it isn't a very nice comment about Europe.
Why exactly is that not a very nice comment about Europe.

1. I think it speaks well for Europeans that shareholders do not want blood on their hands. I suppose you support capitalism in Europe.

2. Why does the US companies not produce sodium thiopental?

I think it is quite ironic, that the US government requests pharmaceutical companies to run huge studies to prove that their products cause no harm, and then want them to sell drugs to be used for executions. I am a shareholder of Lundbeck, and it was actually because of shareholder activism that Lundbesck stopped selling thiopental for use in executions.

The largest Christian denomination in the world denounces capital punishment. How can any self-professed Christian support it?

Free will and theological difference.

"The Laws of the Realm may punish Christian men with death, for heinous and grievous offences.

It is lawful for Christian men, at the commandment of the Magistrate, to wear weapons, and serve in the wars."
