You are correct, I beleive. Good memory.bbking said:If I have a influence on my political thinking it would have to be RFK. It would have made a great election in 68 between Nixon and RFK but I'm really not sure who would have won.
As for the quote - RFK didn't say it - Ted Kennedy said it at RFK's funeral

No, Ted Kennedy repeated it at Bobby's funeral, but RFK used it to end many of his own speeches. Originally, the line can be attributed to George Bernard Shaw. OK, back to my vacation.bbking said:As for the quote - RFK didn't say it - Ted Kennedy said it at RFK's funeral

It's BOBBY's line, bbking. Teddy repeated it at Bobby's funeral.bbking said:You actually like Ted's quote? There is hope for you yet. Embrace the Dark Side my young apprentace.

Well, no, as I said it was Shaw's line. To put it politely, Bobby borrowed it, though he didn't discourage people from thinking that it was he who came up with it, either.TOVisitor said:It's BOBBY's line, bbking. Teddy repeated it at Bobby's funeral.

You're right, it's not really important, but go to the same site you linked and click on quotations and it's the main one listed as being identified to RFK. The reason I pointed out the true source as Shaw is that I think it important to de-mythologize our leaders whenever possible. I can't remember the name of the play the "dream" quote was from, but having read a little of Shaw wouldn't be surprised if it was intended with a sense of irony. He also wrote, "the world is a nursery in which men and women play at being heroes and heroines, saints and sinners".bbking said:First of all I didn't know about the Shaw link, never liked reading Shaw however that was interesting, I would have thought the Kennedy's wouldn't take the chance on not attributing the quote correctly. As for RFK actually saying this in a public forum, I stand by what I said. I do have an American Press book on the history of 1968 and it goes into detail about the assination and the funeral. It also goes thru Ted's eulogy and questions if RFK ever said thing dream thing. Unfortunately I can't find a link to that AP book but a link to the RFK memorial site does not attribute that quote to anyother speech than RFK's eulogy given by Ted. It does however give dates and places for other quotes by RFK, so you would think that this quote would have been taged to some major speech both in public or in the Senate if in fact had he said it.

Anyways it really isn't that important - people can believe what they want.
