Just like Simon, you made an exception to the general rule and only spanked in an extreme situation.

Spanking can be justified in certain circumstances, was affirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada, and is legal.

The Supreme Court doesn't quote the Bible my dear (lotta stuff in the Bible doesn't apply, like when God wanted Abraham to prove his love by asking him to sacrifice his son).

Not saying that I would spank myself, but I know of a parent that did in a store, and when a clerk intruded by claiming she would report it, that parent complained to the store manager, and explained that corporal punishment was permitted by the Supreme Court. The manager apologized for his employee. That parent is a great mother, doesn't take shit from her kids who are well-adjusted (most of the time she would just raise her voice) and older now.

Sometimes, time-outs don't get the message across. I think though grounding and the withdrawal of privileges can be very effective.

Please don't get me wrong, I am not telling you how you should raise your children. All I stated is I don't agree with ANY spankings. I did ONCE when my son was two years old and he tried to stick tweezers in the light socket, I smacked his hand away while yelling "no!" I dived towards him doing somersaults along the way mind you...That was the ONLY time. My children are ahead in their development and are straight A students also. They are not into drugs/drinking/dating (THANK GOD).. and we joke all the time. They know when I am not joking by the seriousness in my eyes and I explain to them I am not happy about something...they draw the line and listen. I didn't have to spank them for them to respect me...because I respect their feelings. I'm not saying your way is wrong Simon...it's just different and we all are entitled to that. I respect that you had felt badly after that one spank and I am sure you are a good parent. That video btw, was HARD for me to watch...I thought it was a skit at first to send a message, but then after I was horrified to see that it was real. Stuff like that happens too much. This can go both ways tho...MEN are sometimes beaten like this by their wives/girlfriends/whoever....I am working on a project that MORE help will be given to men who are abused...open shelters, help lines, etc....

i didn't actually watch the video cuz it would have mad me mad, then i looked a little more into it and found out that this video was shot 4 years ago and the kid had been holding onto it as black mail to her parents. she fucked up and they punished her by taking her car away, so she posted the video on you tube as a pay back. at least that's what i heard, true or not i don't know.

oh and the reason i spanked my kid, i was taking a nap and she stabbed a pen into my ear till it drew blood. woke me up and i reacted before thinking. i didn't spank her when she peeled the scabs off my new tattoo, ruining the tattoo or any other number of times i could have before i did that once. i used to sleep in bad places and hang around bad people, if you felt pain when you were sleeping, you woke up swinging and that is what i did. not a justification, just a reason.

From what I can remember, I was tied up, strapped with a skipping rope and sometimes with the vaccum cleaner, locked in the closet/storage room, kicked out of the house sometimes in the winter with no coat. All this between the ages of 6 to 12.
If you guys think I'm making this shit up, then you really don't know anything.

Again, I'm not even saying what the judge did was right either. But I'm just not at all surprised that these things happen either.

Oh, should probably say that I don't have a good relationship with my parents either till this day.

what did you do to deserve that?
was it your mom or dad dishing out the punishment?
