Times were somewhat different then. Ozzie's .260 average was probably average or maybe even above average for SS's for his time. In fact SS's, 2B's and C's main functions were defence. If they could hit as well, it was a bonus.
I think Cal Ripken changed things for shortstops. Since then A-Rod, Jeter, Tejada, and Nomar (for a few years) have made offense more of a requirement for their position. Nowadays Johnny Mac would be considered below average in hitting. (I still like him.)
