John Amos, who starred as the family patriarch on the hit 1970s sitcom Good Times and earned an Emmy nomination for his role in the seminal 1977 miniseries Roots, has died. He was 84.

Amos’ publicist, Belinda Foster, confirmed the news of his death Tuesday. No other details were immediately available.

He played James Evans Sr. on Good Times, which featured one of television’s first Black two-parent families. Produced by Norman Lear and co-created by actor Mike Evans, who co-starred on All in the Family and The Jeffersons, it ran from 1974 to 1979 on CBS.

“That show was the closest depiction in reality to life as an African American family living in those circumstances as it could be,” Amos told Time magazine in 2021.

His character, along with wife Florida, played by Esther Rolle, originated on another Lear show, Maude. James Evans often worked two manual labor jobs to support his family that included three children, with Jimmie Walker becoming a breakout star as oldest son J.J.

RIP Gordy the weather man. The running joke on the Mary Tyler Moore show was that most people thought he was the sports reporter.

Very powerful in Roots. Easily my first memorable movie experience. Very easy to remember where you were when you watched it for the first time. Historic miniseries. I also liked a few seasons of Good Times quite a bit. RIP John Amos was a legend.

Very good actor. Particularly liked him in the aforementioned 'Coming to America' as well as 'Lock Up" featuring Sly Stallone. Amos played bad ass prison guard but was a good guy.

This was the ending scene. RIP John

He should have stuck with it on ''Good Times''...I know the cast resented the show turning into the Jimmy Walker show.

Ester Rolle and him wanted to do a more serious show that dealt with issues that black people faced during that era.

Norman Lear saw it different...Exit John Amos.

Remember seeing him first on Mary Tyler Moore...He looked really great in that powder blue WJM blazer on the show.

Rest easy.

That is amazing that you mentioned the incredible smile line. Before I realized you posted a link to the incredible smile, I forgot he was the guard in Lock Up. I thought of the “incredible smile” scene right away and then I saw you posted a YouTube link to it. That’s amazing buddy.

Ruggedly handsome actor.

I remember him best as Super Soul's (Clevon Little) Engineer/Body Guard in Vanishing Point. He was right about "Good Times", that show didn't have legs.
