Kid in a Quebec school was told to take his sweater off as it was in violation of "school policy" re dress code. He chose to go home. It was widely advertised that Thursday that it was national wear a sweater day in support of the Humbolt players. Could the school not have relaxed the dress code for ONE day?

Your missing a big chunk of the story. The kid was a multiple offender of breaking the school's dress code, and the jersey he chose to wear didn't comply with what the school instructed the kids to wear if they wanted to participate.
