I like Jazz. Over the Holidays, I've been listening to one of my favorite artists. Terence Blanchard's latest is entitled: Flow. I can't get enough of it. And still one of my favorites is his: 'Romantic Defiance' recording(1995 Sony Music). A website, for those who might be inclined is: www.terenceblanchard.com Sincerely, Jon .

www.jazz.fm should be the website for the station, although I'm sure that you already knew that Mr. Funguy. I've included it here(in my post)should another member wish to check the station out. Back when 91.1 was known as CJRT they had Ted O'Reily(spelling?)who could play some very good jazz(recordings). I think that the only original DJ still at the station is Glen Woodcock. I enjoy Danny Marks' show, and listen regularly to Bob Parlocha(weekdays, Midnight to 6:00 am). Sincerely, Jon .

thanks for sharing...

recently I've been getting into Abdullah "Dollar Brand" Ibrahim

http://www.abdullahibrahim.com/indexf.html

'Water From an Ancient Well' ... 'Mountain' and 'African Piano' ('69 recording) would be good CDs to explore the range of his career ... the last two are hard to find, but not impossible ... easily dl'd in emule to test the waters first.

Hmmm...

...Thank you for your reply, Mr. Pool. I've seen and heard Abdullah Ibrahim/Dollar Brand here in Toronto on two ocassions. Once, at the Bamboo club, and another time down at Harbour Front. I have the: 'Dollar Brand at Montreux' , 1985 ,recording( a digital tape on 'enja' records(ref. #: 43079), and distributed by Ducale S.p.A.; Italy)which is before a fairly large audience of a least a few hundred. From that recording, I could suggest side two, song (1)' The Perfumed Forest Wet With Rain'(9:18 mins. approx.)as a fantastic example of African Jazz. I know that this recording is around on CD. Worth a listen, in my opinion. Sincerely, Jon .

I miss O'Reilly. You could always count on him for the very best. He would announce song details before and after the song. I suspect he had problems having to do with a trend at CJRT toward more commercialism at the expense of quality. He was obviously a strong personality and may not have been for everyone. But this Larry Green is quite interesting on later afternoons. He's also been referred to as Lawrence of the Radio -- Get it?

Thank you Mr. Funguy07 for your response...

...I too, miss O'Reilly. I believe that you're right about O'reilly's departure from the station; as he clearly would only appeal to the real Jazz connoisseur. In my view, there was and is an attempt to 'market' Jazz on 91.1 to an 'upscale' audience as some kind of 'lifestyle' accessory for the upwardly mobile; and the quality of the music played has suffered as a result. I don't know about Larry Green. From my perspective, Mr. Green has a flat and dull tonal quality to his voice. His ennuciation is sloppy, his diction is careless and the rising cadence in his voice...? So that everything that he says sounds like a question? Even when providing factual information? He sounds like he's asking a question? Maybe it's just me(lol)...and no, I don't get the 'Lawrence of the Radio' thing. What does that mean? 91.1 fm does provide the music to a larger audience, and that's good, as Jazz is an Art form. I listen to Bob Parlocha as he too, has an appreciation for pre 1970's Jazz...and he plays Lonny Smith...frequently(lol), too. Sincerely, Jon .

Now there's something I've never considered...

I go to my fav MP. Soothing jazz during the rub.:)
...Mr. Goodtime...uh...opps...didn't you ask once not to call you 'Mr.' Goodtime?; just 'Goodtime'? I'm just being polite. The use of 'Mr.' and 'Ms.' denotes respect(I'm new on the site). I'd like to hear anything by John Lee Hooker, as background music when I'm enjoying the company of a MP. But heh, to each their own. Sincerely, Jon .

I'm just teasing with the Mister thing. Most don't take the time for simple act of respect and courtesy, such as greet with a smile or open door for a lady.

Your sir, are a gentleman of respect and fine taste. Ah, John Lee Hooker, knew his music but only learned his name from an MPA and fellow MP fans.

The soothing is for the massage portion. The mood as with my music preference varies with stage of the session: the transistion, flip, build-up, and Grand finale.

Thank you Mr. Goodtime for your reply and kind words...

...Yeah...Respect...which is often times absent on these internet boards. Lol(Should you have the time and inclination, you might wish to check out Mr. 1Hornychinaman's Thread entitled: 'Awkward Question', in the Lounge section for an example of how people can react to another member's expression of opinion...Lol). I listen to mostly Jazz, but I do have a small section in my Music library of Blues. In addition to John Lee Hooker, I also enjoy Buddy Guy very much; who, I understand will be playing Massey Hall on March 29th . I've been listening to the latest release of Wallace Rooney(Jazz)these days. It would be nice to have an active Jazz and Blues thread here on the site.

As you can probably tell from my sig line, my taste in music is all over the map. Pending on mood, soothing, heart pounding, stomp my feet, or social statement protest, like 'em all.

I've been advocating for Music and TV forums for a while but no steady interest I guess.

acutus,

You are indeed a lucky man. I am only a neophyte when it comes to Jazz. Attending gigs used to be a part of my life more than this [so called] hobby ever was ... I have a zip of Live at Montreux in compressed format. It's a great performance and betters the studio versions, although I always feel it's too short. Maybe it's time to bite the bullet and buy it so that I can hear it properly.

I was thinking of starting a favorite jazz recordings thread, but wasn't sure how much interest it would garner with jazz being so "upscale" and all ... Zappa had it right.

PS don't get me started on courtesy and consideration ... no, really.

The Music thread is a good idea...

... Mr. Goodtime. ( I don't watch that much TV, except for the News and occasional movie or documentary; but I'd contribute to a Music Thread.). I enjoy all kinds of Music, providing that it sounds real. Sincerely, Jon .

...Yeah...Mr. Pool, why is it that I believe I know exactly what you're talking about with regard to courtesy and consideration on these so called 'adult' boards? When I first became aware of these kinds of sites, I thought, what a great idea! Being anonymous should encourage people to be free to express their point of view openly...Lol... I have since modified that viewpoint. I listened to Frank Zappa a lot when I was a younger fellow. His albums: 'Overnight Sensation'; 'Apostrophe'; etc. etc. were favorites. Also, Zappa's interest in Jazz was as credible as any other Jazz Musician, in my view. His 'Waka Jawaka' album(spelling?), among others, still sounds good to me. It's unfortunate that Jazz music is seen, commonly, as 'upscale' or in some other way inaccessable to the 'average' person. By the way, anyone who knows about and listens to Dollar Brand/Abdullah Ibrahim can not describe themselves as a neophyte with regard to Jazz; as this is Jazz Music(composition and playing) at a very refined level. The 'Dollar Brand at Montreux' is around on CD. Have a look for it the next time that you're around Sam's or HMV's downtown location. Now, for a hard to find Abdullah Ibrahim recording...try getting a copy of his 'Underground in Africa' release, which is one of his earlier recordings. We might just have a Jazz Thread here in the making. Sincerely, Jon .

I love Zappa too and I'd love a jazz thread but sheesh, someone says jazz and it can be anything from Louis Armstrong (swing), Fats Waller (stride), Charlie Parker (be-bop), early Miles (cool), the 60's Blue Note years (hard bop), Weather Report (fusion), Cecil Taylor (avant-garde), Kenny G (soft), ... you get the idea ...

If you like Abdullah Ibrahim, you should also check out Randy Weston, Ahmad Jamal and Muhal Richard Abrams. Too bad jazz has a snobby and upscale air about it now, as most jazz legends in their prime were rebelious, bold and barrier-breaking.

Lol...

I'm having problems posting on this site. There appears to be a time limit of only a couple of minutes for me to compose my replies and post them. If I take a few minutes to write a reply, then I have to log back in to the site and my post is deleted. Like I've said before, someone on the site may be trying to tell me something...Lol...Sincerely, Jon .

...Let's hope that this is the beginning of a Jazz/Music Thread. I enjoy both Randy Weston and Ahmad Jamal. I'm not familiar with Muhal Richard Abrams. What instrument doees he play? I agree that Jazz music in its inception was very much about rebellion(against 'traditional' musical thinking). Sincerely, Jon .

Muhal Richard Abrams is a pianist, as well as a composer, arranger, and band leader.
