Women: hitting your man is not cute; it's abuse

A new US survey indicates that young women are three times as likely to admit hitting their partner than men, but the normalisation of intimate violence is a disturbing trend with miserable implications for both genders, argues Jennifer O'Mahony

In short, pop culture gives the impression it is cute, or empowering, or even sexy when women hit men. The scene reversed would carry a single connotation of misogyny and out-of-control male aggression, but here we are expected to laugh, or even to be turned on by these characters' resort to the grim shortcut of violence to deal with problems.
And young women are clearly taking note. It was revealed this week that one in seven women aged 15-22 in the US admits to hitting their partner, compared to just one in twenty men.

Where was the bitch slap? Didn't look she connected with his face in the first part.

He probably fucked some other chick behind Beyonce's back.

But really, who fucking cares?
Those were no bitch slaps. If you look at the video she hit him several times with her foot while wearing high heels, very close to his groin. Those heels could be classified as a weapon. She should be charge regardless of him not presing charges.

In Canada violence is classified as domestic only when romantic aspect is involved. Father-daughter, bro-bro etc is not domestic. The idea presumably is that romantic aspect adds a lot of risk of recurrence etc.
Oh good, then I didn't misunderstand.

Afterhours is right about the law. I disagree. I think any family violence should be consider domestic. There is an atttatchment between the parties and usually some extra care and security is require after a physical altercation but it is what is it.

This happened in the states though, no? So I don't know what the law is down there.

Classified by whom?

There are no offences in the CCC for 'domestic' or 'family' violence.

Not sure what powers the DA has to initiate charges without a complaint from JayZ in the US.

The real question is why didn't Bey kick her ass for slappin her man around? Further, why doesn't Jay tell Bey that it's either gonna be him or Solange and if she isn't prepared to be with him then he has to kick her to the curb. Where is the dudes self-respect and sense of personal dignity?

Where is the outrage? The Larry king shows talking about this act of violence? The news is treating this more like a joke than anything. Jay z was kicked and punched.

I hope he leads a movement dealing with this sort of violence against men.

If your brother hits your wife, that's not domestic violence either. If Beyonce were the one that hit Jay-Z, then you'd be correct about it being domestic violence. This would just be assault but if I'm not mistaken, it's only assault if the person who was assaulted files charges. So, if Jay-Z isn't calling it assault, it's not assault. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about it. Of course, I'm not a lawyer. I might not be understanding it correctly at all.
you are right, you are not understanding it correctly. Just because Jay-Z didn't file charges doesn't mean it's not assault. He most probably has reasons not to. After all she's still family.

and men still need to worry about WK's...

Jay z is a self made man. He really had to struggle to get to where he is. Beyonce just had to show a bit of skin like that kardashian tramp.

I hope jay sues her ass for battery and attempted sexual assault.

On that note, I agree that there is a double standard in place. Equality should be everywhere, 100% of the time.
I'm still not convinced there isn't a double standard here yet. Don't cops always complain that they show up to domestic disputes and can't do anything because the wife doesn't want to press charges? Seems to me the onus is on the one being abused to decide if they want to go forward with it. If Jay Z doesn't want to pursue it, that's his call. In what way is that a double standard?

Why is it that Canadians just don't understand their legal system and how it is different/worse/better than that of the USA.

They aren't in Canada - in Canada its the police that lay charges based on their sometimes warped reality of the Public 'good', and whether a law has been broken

In the USA, the 'victim' can decide whether to press charges or not.

Maybe Jay-Z isn't the gangsta he appears to be. Drake said he ran into him in the Governor's Lounge at the ACC licking a gelato.

And here's another "not what they seem" item. Kanye West will tie the knot with Kim Kardassian at the Belvedere Palace in Florence. For a dickweed he does have a romantic side.
