Does the human population necessarily need to increase?

It might not be a bad thing for the human population to decrease. With automation and the modern economy, we don't need bodies like we used to. I'm sure that there is an ideal population and this planet is way over it.

I agree completely. We should be celebrating the decline of human populations. We'd be in better shape with a few billion less people.

The Japanese are adept at robot technology. They would prefer robots over immigration since they are generally xenophobic, racist and abhor immigration to bolster their declining population.

Back in the bad old days, we would let "nature take its course". Now, we mess with nature and that is why the human population keeps growing, maybe past the point of sustainability of this planet. For example, the reason why Ethiopia constantly suffers from starvation is because the human population has outgrown the land's ability to sustain life.

Same thing is happening in medicine where more and more bugs are resistant to anti-biotics.

Ethiopia suffers from the threat of constant starvation currently because of corrupt geopolitical practices, civil war and corrupt local governments more than anything else.

The human population continues to grow at a good clip. The countries with slow and potentially declining rates of population growth need to address the issue of having fewer people working to pay for the services needed by a growing number of retirees who also are living longer. The high population growth rates are in less developed parts of the world such as Africa where they have problems providing food and water to the existing population. The commodities supercycle had the potential to bring the wealth to help many of these nations address this, but this game saver is not looking so good now.

Agreed.

Out of the 7 billion people in the world, I'd estimate at least 1 billion are complete tools that offer nothing to the rest of society..... locked up crooks, and unproductive leaches to society, who have never contributed. I don't care if someone is a 40 year old paperboy. At least he's doing something.

I don't expect kids going to school, or 70 year old retirees who did their time to magically turn into doctors. Kids need to time to learn, have fun and become something, while old people deserve to relax in their final decades. Nor do I expect someone who got unlucky with a bad disease or born without arms or something which shortchanged their potential from day one.

But for that middle bracket of able bodied 20-50 year olds in their prime screwballing around.... they should be shipped to an isolated island and be asses among themselves.

Back in the old days they would be pressed ganged into the Royal Navy and sent to fight the French or the Spanish.
Now they play computer games in their parents' basement.

Oh wow, all these comments about how great it would be if the world population shrank.

Ladies and gentlemen, the effect on economic growth and asset values would be just devastating. Real estate - down continuously. Business profits and investment - down continuously.

We would be a more or less permanent deflation/recession. The last 400 years the world economy has benefitted from this tailwind of population growth. throwing it in reverse would sure as hell create some problems.

The people who hate the human race and wish it would go away tend to be the same people who hate the West, hate democracy, pretty much hate everything about themselves. Some sort of self loathing sickness.
