A robot developed by Japanese scientists is so fast it can "win" the rock-paper-scissors game against a human every single time.

The Janken robot - named after the game's Japanese name - is a faster version of one unveiled by University of Tokyo researchers in June 2012.

Version two completes its chosen hand shape almost at the same time as the human hand.

It uses high-speed recognition and reaction, rather than prediction.

Technically, the robot cheats because it reacts extremely quickly to what the human hand is doing rather than making a premeditated simultaneous action as the rules state.

Taking just one millisecond (ms) - a thousandth of a second - to recognise what shape the human hand is making, it then chooses a winning move and reacts at high speed.

Version one completed its shape 20ms after the human hand; version two finishes almost simultaneously.

The scientists at the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory, part of the University of Tokyo, specialise in a range of technologies, including "sensor fusion", which aims to replicate and improve upon the human senses using high-speed intelligent robots.

I wonder what would happen if they had two of these robots playing against each other?

Cool tech, exploiting human limitation.
Lets just hope they don't put a gun in its hand and let it predict what someone is going to do.

I predict Japan will attempt to solve the worker shortage problem with robotics instead of allowing for immigration. They have already failed at reducing the failing birth rate and now more diapers are sold for seniors than for neonates in Japan. The xenophobic government will follow the will of the people and not let in foreign workers. Japan's excellence in robotics will continue and if the controversial stimulus effort of the Shinzo Abe government cause the Japanese economy to turn around ending the decade and a half long recession the worker shortage will become even more drastic. There is a shortage of nurses in Japan and there are major efforts to have robotics providing limited nursing duties as opposed to allowing in foreign trained nurses. Philipino nurses who have passed Japanese language and nursing equivalency examinations are not welcome to a great extent in Japan.

I hope they succeed. Japan will be a good example of how a country can still have a thriving economy without immigration.

Japan as a nation does not tell the truth regarding what they did to surrounding nations during WW2 to their own people. When I asked a Japanese visa student what his thoughts were during WW2 regarding how Japanese soldiers treated civilians of China (Nanking), Philippines, and Korea. His reply was "Japan liberated and helped all the asian countries". My reply was "ok buddy".

China better conquer Japan before they invent robot soldiers...

Maybe the Japanese will mate with robots too... Robot porn will be the next hot thing in Japan.
