TCM is doing a retrospective of Jane's early films, I found it fascinating how different her career was from her closest rival: Julie Christie. Christie is 2.5 younger than Fonda, whereas Jane did a number of light comedies in her early career, Christie's was meteoric. While Jane made Barbarella, Christie made Dr. Zhivago. In the 60's Julie Christie and Peter O'Toole dominated the decade in more ways than one. The were hot box-office properties and they could pass for twins. Jane caught up with Julie with They Shoot Horses Don't They and went on to dominate the 70's. And as for the twins comparison, O'Toole's heavy drinking caused him to lose his blue eyed androgynous look. By the time he made The Stunt Man (after a bout with illness brought on by being a lush), he was no longer Julie Christie's twins.
