As a kid, I went to play mini-golf at Jane-Finch all the time. Never had any problems.

The real tough guys won't bother people just for the hell of it, it's only the punks. From my experience, I'm more afraid of the rich kid banger wannabees who know that daddy's lawyer will bail them out.

I use to visit friend in Jane-Finch all the time when I was younger. Never had problems.

I used to work around there, I would go to Jane-Finch mall at lunch time in my suit, looking like a white guy in a suit. I never had a problem, as usual, even though it is a high crime area, 99% of the people are hard-working good people. I would probably avoid driving through late at night, just in case my car broke down or something. I have certainly been to places in the US that were 100 times worse, even the East side of Vancouver is worse than anything I have seen here.

Any place during the day is fine. People like to compare it to Compton or something - nowwhere close. Jane/Finch is basically one street - Driftwood and the public housing complex on it. Same as Jamestown in Rexdale. The area surrounding it - fine. The public housing complexes - not fine. I've lived in the apartments just off of Driftwood for a short while and also grew up in Rexdale not far from Jamestown. I've seen both ends - the areas around both are more white than anything else. There's more Italians at Jane/Finch than there are blacks (I've done the population density study for the area back in University). Be that as it may, whether you want to call the T.O. gangs posers or not, compared to those in the U.S. or Latin America - so be it. The fact remains that its not an area that you want to be in at night alone if you don't know anyone.

That statement is SOOOO wrong since I am black .... since EVERYONES grandparents or great grand parents were an immigrants to canada at one point in time.

Jane & finch driftwood areas, just has parents who dont really pay attention to thier kids, or kids with no guidence and direction so they follow what they see on tv, which these days happen to be violence and sex.

Their parents are too busy working and living pay check to pay check. and Jane& Finch is not filled with blacks its low income families that live there.

And any low income neightbourhood, jane & finch, jungle, golloway, regent park, st jamestown, has these problems of shooting, muggings and rape. and its not about what race of people live in them its about the money. the less money you have the less things you are able to do so they find other things to do.

It has been proven to my satisfaction that neither race nor money has much to do with one's likelyhood of committing a crime. The biggest predictor is IQ, the dumber you are, the more likely you are to commit a crime. Jane and Finch seems typical of many GTA less-desirable areas: it is mix of recent immigrants who are starting at the bottom and there only briefly, and losers who are staying forever. It is the the losers that cause all the problems.

Unfortunately the vast majority of the pictures in the newspapers of young people being killed by gun fire are young black males. The shooters are for the most part young black males. Society is now becoming immune to the daily carnage. Young black men killling other young black men is now relegated to the back pages of our newspapers. When the attitude becomes "who gives a shit" the carnage will never cease.

your right...My son is mixed...he goes to a private school...I dont understand how these parents allow their children to run around with guns and drugs...it's just really sad...I will never allow my son to do the type of stuff these kids do...I would put my son in jail so fast his head would spin LOL

Moet, part of the problem is too many young black children are being brought up in single parent homes. There is a tendency in the male black community to father children then accept little responsibility for the outcome. Without a postive father/male image growing up and in the home it makes it difficult for young children of any race to have a positive self image. There is even a term for these women "mother child", that is used in the black community to describe women who have had a child then been abandoned by the father.

You seem to be doing your best in protecting your child with positive actions (private schools, and a caring attitude), unfortunately a lot of children do not have a parent like yourself, or parents with the financial ability to help them on life's journey.

Yeah I can honestly say I am very lucky...as me and the father are NOT together anymore and haven't been for along time now...BUT He is a great father...a great person...school/good job...I have to say my son is very lucky...

Moet, Big Brothers is a solid organization, unfortunatley there are not enough "Big Brothers" involved to go around. I am not saying single parent families are resticted soley to the black community. However it is apparent by the killings of young black men on young black men that a serious problem does exist in the black community. One solution would be for women of all races to exercise a little more judgement on who they have unprotected sex with.

There is the old Asprin remedy. If women used Asprin as a birth control remedy by placing the Asprin firmlly between their knees and holding it there until they were postive their partner was a caring and solid long term partner some of these issues might be resolved.
