One of my Afghani female students who was long haired and 'wild,' prior to the summer vacation, showed up all 'covered up,' and demure the first day back at University. .....so what gives?.........

Maybe she moved back in with her family.

I have a Muslim LF who after she moved out of her father's home 'let lose' and began to dress in 'western styles' etc. Her father not only cut her off all family and financial support he told her she his not allowed back in his house again unless she again begins to adopt his Muslim beliefs.

P.S. Yes... very interesting read. Thanks rama putri.

Folks:

Interesting article.

There is much truth in the statement that while "not all Muslims are terrorists; most terrorists are Muslim". The current generation of Muslims around the world needs to examine how they want to tackle this problem.

Regards.

Perhaps, but I'm not convinced we always get an accurate view of what really goes on in "their" media over here.
I'm referring to what I read first party.

Much of what is published daily in the Arab media about Jews in particular would be considered a hate crime in the Western media. It's scandalous, really. But much of the Arab world is stuck somewhere in the 12th Century, but you're not allowed to say that for fear of offending Muslims.

Since 9/11 there have been scarcely a word written in the Arab media about the problem of suicide bombers and the killing of innocents by Arab terrorists. It's always the blame game, and it's finally wearing thin enough that brave Arabs are speaking out.

We in the West with any sort of conscience have been busy hammering our democracy's leaders about the culpability of the US and Isreal in creating the seeds of terrorism, but in the Arab world, there's been little sense of responsibility that it might be more complex than just the other guy's fault.

Once again: about bloody time.

A very thoughtful - and accurate - post. Its a shame that more critical discussion about Islam isn't presented in this way. It seems that the bulk of the debate comes down to "we should nuke Mecca because they're all terrorists" versus "you can't say that you racist, imperialist bastard".

Not that I am so surpirised by some of the comments made.... While its true, the muslim world does need to do some introspection...... there are reasons as to why this is the situation...NO, I am not trying to find excuses, just pointing out some of the reasons.... the actions taken by both the Americans and the Israeli's for the past do not exactly contribute to stability, and with that the dictators stay in place... and with slumping economies, and growing young populations with no opportunities, an unemployed young frustrated lonely man will head towards anything that gives him hope , reason, and meaning to life, it is usually the mosques where the lectures are more political than religious......

In conclusion, who do you fight first external or internal forces, or both ? and to say that the west had nothing to do with this is naive at best....

here are two links. Mao on arab media, would you find some bigotry :

This is a defeatist attitude, blaming others for your situation. This has been the focus of much of the media we see about suicide bombers. (the emperors-clothes has an interresting academic debate on the causes of suicide bombers)

I believe that the idea behind the article is that there are many muslims who find there is NO valid reason for terrorist activities.

The culture of many Islamic countries does not value a free press in the same way that western society does. This means that the media in those countries will promote the views of the ruling powers. In addition, Islamic fundamentalism has an extremely strong ability in many countries to lobby the rule makers. The strength of these groups lies in the ability of the fundamentalist clerics to appeal to the vulnerable people loaded mentioned.

It isn't unexpected that these comments are coming from Lebanon which has been westerized to some extent for the past 100 or so years. If this was from a country like Iran, either the government or the fundamentalistswould have him for a nice little chat.

Like all good media, the english language articles are directed for a western audiance. We would not accept the overtly racist statements so they are simply not printed. Try comparing the text of press releases given the same day in english and arabic. In some cases(maybe the minority), the same source can be found to tell the west that they are seeking a peaceful solution while telling their arabic audiance that the infidels must die.
