That call today didn't even have enough mustard for a yellow card yet alone a PENALTY SHOT !!!!
12 SECONDS left, you got to be kidding me......what kind of victory was that !
A true fan of the sport will tell you that it truly was an unfair call.
I really couldn't tell you the way I would of felt if I was Italian, all I keep hearing from the Italian fans is that they deserved the win because of all the chances they had......
SO WHAT ! That just shows that Australia played well and they defended strongly.
It was destiny that the game should have gone to overtime. I truly believe that Australia should have been given that chance in overtime considering how well they played.
The bottom line is that if Italy's opponent today happen to be Germany, Brazil, Portugal or Argentina that penality would NOT have been called !!!!!!!!!!!!!
My final comment is that Australia was the BLACK HORSE in this World Cup and they were kicked out before the race was over by a REF who was on drugs.There is no chance that they would of won the World Cup, but at least loosing fairly would have been more appreciated !!

It was the ref who made the call...not the Italians. The Australians had an extra man, and still didn't do anything. So go have some cheese with that "whine". I'm not a "die hard" Italian fan, but I am Italian.:eek:

But it was, anyone impeding progress of another player like that in the penalty zone will be called. The Italian player would have had a clear shot on the goalie, one on one, if the Australian player didn't slide in fron of him, so the ref had no choice but to call it. It's unfortunate that a team has to lose like that, but them's the rules.

I agree. Clear foul. Wretched for the Aussies who played their hearts out for 94 minutes and outplayed the Italians consistently throughout the 2nd half. But that's sports.

Although I believe the foul was at best iffy, Italy won by the rules of the game.

Australia could have been up 3 to nil had they converted on some of their oportunities.

The Italian goaltender won that game for them he was awesome. I feel bad for the Aussies and I also believe the Italian fans should give credit where credit is due.

You hear top sports teams saying things like we were lucky to pull this one out today. Not the Italians.... you would think that by the way they celebrate they had won the match by a 10 to 0 score.

Italian soccer fans are worse than Leaf fans...;)

The villain in this tragedy is the aussie defender who committed a foul, or something that to the referee looked like a foul 12 seconds before the end of the game in the penalty box.

You north americans should know that refereeing in a soccer game is an art form, and everybody expects the referee to make mistakes. You hardly ever see players question the referee, because it would lead to anarchy, and besides, soccer is considered a GAME, where luck and circumstance also plays on the field.

Obviously the refereee has no choice but to use the same rules throughout the game. A goal scored 2 seconds before the end of the game counts also.

Why is it that Italy always seems to be the one team who is considered ''lucky'' when they win a game the way they did yesterday? There's so much talk about this and if it was another team,say Brazil,who wins a game this way,well then that's ok because Brazil is Brazil,and they would have won the game regardless,right? Bullshit! Most of the ''soccer experts'':rolleyes: on this board wouldn't say shit if it was Brazil or Argentina who were in the same situation. Like someone said earlier,Italy won by the rules of the game. Game over. If Italy was on the other end and they lost on a last minute PK,then everyone would be saying how they choked and how Australia was the cinderella team of the tournament with their ''shocking'' victory over Italy. The Swiss should have beat Ukraine,but they didn't. No one seems to jumping all over that team? I hope Ghana beats Brazil's ass today. This would be the upset of the tournament,and I can smell it coming,hehehehe!!!!!!! Can you tell I'm not a Brazil fan?

Dream on! Brasil can actually score goals (something that Italy, Ukraine, Australia, Switzerland cant seem to do, the swiss not even on penalty kicks).

My thoughts...

First... I'm not a fan of Italian football. I am a devout Brazil fan... and Italy are my arch rivals.

However...

Though I also dont think a foul should have been called, it was... they scored and they won. That was a huge score by Totti under a helluva lot of pressure. Imagine what would have happened to him had he missed that kick. He would have had to go into permanent hiding had he missed that kick. Kudos to Totti for getting it done when it counted...

Something Australia did NOT do.

Australia had ample opportunity to score with the extra man for all those minutes. They had their destiny in their own hands and failed to capitalize. They only have themselves to blame for not capitilazing by scoring with the extra man. Had they done their jobs we wouldnt be talking about this right now. If Aussie fans are complaining... it should be because they gave the ref a reason to have to make that call in the first place. Fuck the refs.... score more goals than the opposition. THAT you can control. Refs decisions, you cannot....

I'm of the opinion that you cannot leave anything to chance. Bury goals and win... that's the simplest way to deal with bad officiating dirty play (see: Portugal vs. Holland thread).

As for the Italian team... any objective viewer would agree that they have not played up to the standard that is expected of them. And I hope nobody tries to hand me any shit about them playing down to their opposition. A honest fan of Italy would admit that they were shitting their pants in that game until the penalty was called and Totti scored.

In the end... a very disappointing loss for the Aussies and a very, very fortunate result for the Italians. Italy has had enough time in this tourney to get themselves primed. If they end up losing in the subsequent rounds, I just hope we dont have to listen to a thousand excuses/blaming officials, so on and so on.

Lastly... they will LOSE if they play another game like this against ANY of the remaining favourites in this tourney.
