They don't have choppers or planes?

Italian police drove at 230 km an hour from northern Italy to Rome on a life-saving mission.

Italy's state police drove a specially-equipped Lamborghini Huracan from Padua to Rome to transport a kidney to a patient in the capital's Gemelli hospital.

The life-saving mission saw the police driving in the fast line from the northern Veneto region, with sirens blaring and lights flashing all the way to Rome, reaching speeds of up to 230 km an hour.

The officers, who covered 490 km in just over three hours, made the journey in record time, delivering the kidney safely to the hospital where doctors were on standby to proceed with the urgent surgery on 20 October.

The usual journey time, in a regular car, is four hours and 40 minutes.

The 600-horsepower racing car is modified especially to carry out life-saving activities, with its front trunk containing refrigerated equipment for transporting organs and a defibrillator for emergency rescue.

I bet the driver was having a helluva good time.

Those options were available but Italians are driving junkies, they don't take well to being passive passengers. The Padua College of Medicine is the world's oldest, established in 1222.

Lamborghini, not just for goofy hot chicks.

Lamborghini provides the car free to the Italian police for publicity, to promote highway safety and for life saving events like organ deliveries. It would be faster to deliver organs by helicopter to another city but to do it by lamborgini is to promote the brand and bring prestige to Italy. I suspect it is a regular delivery and not a case where the patient is preped and waiting for the organ.

Car companies pay big bucks to have their products places in movies. In 2004 Ford paid to have the Ford Medeo in the James Bond movie with Daniel Craig.

McDonald's has a full restaurant with full parking available for movie makers to use for free just to get publicity for the burger franchaise.

I don't know about the surgery, the article says the doctors were on stand by for a urgent operation. But its possible that Lamborgini gave them the car, but its not like Lambo's need publicity.

Regular car vs. Lamborghini only saved them 1 hour 40 minutes. A helicopter can go 240 kph at regular speeds, delivery by helicopter would save them an additional hour vs. Lamborghini. The usual journey time, in a regular car, is four hours and 40 minutes. The savings in time by Lamborghini is marginal. You would have to have the Lamborghini where the organ is, if the car is at the other end of the country it would be of no use.

a regular car would cover this distance without stops for gas. Lambo you'd need to fill at least once. Plus couple of stops for cops with radars, even if quick. All in all, not very different from a fiat 500.

They used a Huracan to transport the kidney, even with a fuel stop it would have beaten anything on the road. Only a million dollar Supercar like a Bugatti Bolide would have beaten it. A Dodge Viper would have spun out of control on the mountainous roads.
