also, Sotto in the Village (twin of Sotto Sotto). It's in Forrest Hill Village - good food, not sleek, but quaint and cozy for sure.

If you want sleek and Fantastic food (some of the best in Toronto) and dropping $300 on dinner doesn't phase you -
Colborne Lane. (The owner / chef is Italian - Claudio Aprile) Go for the tasting menu. It truly is fucking amazing.

I would have to say East Side Mario's. They have excellent service and offer up some pretty good cuisine. I'm sure it will greatly impress your date and you will be a loyal customer.
Ristorante Roma is a quaint, nice place on Bloor East of Dufferin. A friend of mine used to go there for a pizza after leaving HOL2 (this place is open till 4 am for its take-out pizza so the restaurant is open that late too). I never thought it was a ristorante but I dropped by once and I was so impressed that I took a gal who lived nearby and she was equally as impressed.

Now, here's another place you can go that's more upscale, Vibo in Etobicoke (formerly Villa Borghese), http://www.vibo.ca/
Across the street is the less pretentious but quaint Papa Joe's (or Papa Something).
There's also Pinocchios at the NW corner of Islington and Dundas, or Leonardo's across the street (east of Islington).
If you want ultra Pretentious and expensive, there's Via Allegro across from Sherway Gardens Mall but I didn't like it.

I've been to this place. Meh.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED Silver Spoon on Roncessvalles. It was a crying shame when Rocco closed it, but I was filled with hope when I read that he was just bored with Silver Spoon after 15 years and wanted to do something different and was opening Enoteca.
Went there - totally forgetable experience. I might go back and give it one more chance just to see if they've improved, or were just having an off night. It's also not very sleek or cozy as the OP was searching for. Just another restaurant.

Along the same vein, one must not forget Frankie Tomatto's, an icon in the GTA. Your date will surely be impressed by their leaning tower of Pisa and will be more than satiated after a few trips to the famed spaghetti parlour. All you could want for a truly memorable date.

Allegros near Sherway. Arguably the best wine Cellar in Toronto, amazing food and service second to none. It's in a small plaza some might think it's not cozy but go check it out.
I have had two disappointing evenings at Terroni. Bad service from wannabe actors, disappointing over priced food and cramped tables with no privacy. Was much better years ago before all the Hoopla.
