If you don't mind spending the $$$, try Rosa's Place in North York or Villa Sorento in Missisauga

Delicioso

Try Grano, on Yonge street between Davisville and Eglinton.

Great food. Also called a Cuccina (Italian for Kitchen) by many.

Can't go wrong!

Tee OH!
I like Rosa's place but I think it's too high end for what you were looking for.

I vouche for Terroni's as well.

I like Marcello's on St. Clair & Dufferin

Marcello's

It's a cozy place with a home-style feel to it. Even if it isn't run by a family, it sure has that atmosphere like it is.

If you want a real homie place where the food is good, and very reasonable - Mamma Martinos on the Queensway would be my choice. Everything on the menu is under 10 bucks. Not fancy, but very solid food.
Beat me to it. Family run place, good size portions and excellent prices. Be prepared to wait if you go during prime time.

Thanks for all the reply's...I will now have to a little homework and post a review!
ONE at Hazelton Hotel.
I ate there a couple of nights ago and the Italian food on their menu was outstanding . Fresh and 'paese' style.
We had for antipasto a plate of farro and another plate of sauteed baby artichokes. Next was pasta with ricotta and rapini followed bty Mediterranean lamb.
The best Italian restaurant in Toronto of all time was 'La Trattoria Romana' on Cumberland in the '70s. It was owned by a practising Italian doctor who was also the chef!!

OP did not want upscale so I think that would rule out ONE.

And there's Gio's Really Good Restaurant itself, on Queen E, at Leslie. No sign, look for a building that looks like a fifties bank with a giant nose—see the above post where the nose used to be—hanging over the sidwalk. Large parties can book the vault. Thursdays are opera nights. Earlier is quieter, it can get pretty jolly as the evening goes on.

Just N of Shepard and Yonge

Armando's. 4864 Yonge Street, North York. Armando is the cook; amazing food, inexpensive... love the mussels. MMMMM... now I have to go there for supper on the weekend!

Terroni

I am looking for a "homestyle" Italian restaurant, no chain restaurants (i.e. Olive Graden) some place that they cook with fresh ingredients. Not too upscale as I will be taking my parents and they feel uncomfortable in high end restaurants. Something with great food and great atmosphere.

Thanks in Advance
You may try: Terroni
Several locations. I like the one at Adelaide, a very classic bilding. Good food. No reservations. There may be line ups. They also have one at Queen St.

http://www.terroni.ca/

They have also opened a slightly different style at their old location at Victoria street. Osteria
"The most important thing to know about the latest outpost in Terroni’s empire is that there are no pizzas. That’s right—there’s not a single pie on the tiny menu of Apulian tavern–style dishes. Plus, the service is warm-hearted rather than unapproachably chic (surprises abound in the buzzing space). A meal might begin with the five daily antipasti, which vary from heavenly grilled squid to a crusty fried sandwich of rapini and Barese sausage. Simple pastas ..."

And if you really wanted super class, that your parent might find ostentatious, is off course, Via Allegro . My personal favorite.

Have a good meal with your parents and be blessed. Cheers

You may also consider Sotto Sotto, two locations, Yorkville (Avenue Rd) and Spadina:

Via is probably best in the city but definetely outside of many of the OP's guidelines. (location, $$ and atmosphere to name a few)

Zucca Trattoria fits your request. 2150 Yonge St. http://www.zuccatrattoria.com/
