Stop dreaming about war, please.

Taiwan is obviously part of China, just as Hong Kong is. France was never part of Germany.

The opposition party in Taiwan is in favor of re-unification. I believe it is inevitable. Taiwan will be guaranteed special status for 50 years I bet you there are secrets talks going on as we post here.
You started a huge long thread whining and crying how you were feelings were hurt and that you were leaving, but yet your back snd still defending the despots of the world and the worst human rights offenders no surprise

Taiwan is its own country China doesn’t get to decide what Taiwan does

The people of the Republic of China decide if they're part of something or not- it's called self determination.
That was the point I was making. I predict they will choose re-unification with PRC.

So Biden repeated what Bush and Clinton said and they have expressly clarified there isn't a change in policy.

People love to overreact.

The U.S. needs to lower the temperature in demonizing the PRC.

Also, bear in mind that the PRC has enough USD IOU's to sink the U.S. dollar. How, you ask? By dumping the USD IOU's on the open market.
And when the Chinese get all this cash back from "dumping the USD IOU's" where do these U.S. Dollars go? When you try to answer this question, you will understand the difficulty (and impossibility) of dumping U.S. treasuries.

From my Taiwanese connections here and there, the support for reunification has greatly chilled after the crackdowns on Hong Kong. How could the Taiwanese now take any treaty or agreement with the Chinese seriously?

And where do these Dollars go? This is the fundamental nature of international trade. The money has to go somewhere. And no, nobody wants the Chinese buying their government bonds. In fact, no country could even come close to absorbing all the Chinese cash from running chronic deficits.

danmand has always disliked the U.S. It distorts his view of the world.

For him, Taiwan represents U.S. imperialism even if the Taiwanese people might have something else to say.

The return of Taiwan to China will happen by Quasi democratic means, as it happened to Hong Kong.
And how exactly did the people of Hong Kong decide to be controlled by Beijing quasi-democratically?

China is only rattling its saber to try and draw domestic attention away from the fragility in its economic growth model. The issues with the enormous property developer Evergrande are only the tip of the iceberg.

And yes, the economic interdependence of China and the West makes it quite difficult for China to make a military move on Taiwan. The Chinese economy currently needs Western markets. While the West (namely the U.S.) would suffer severe supply disruptions, the U.S. would likely spend two years rebuilding supply capabilities in the Western Hemisphere.

How China would proceed without Western demand? They would probably try to go back to a more state-managed economy. How popular would that with the Chinese people would be anyone's guess. The stakes for China are far bigger than the United States. If the Chinese think it through, I'm not sure Taiwan is that important to the them in the scheme of things.

PS- Full confession, I searched "Taiwan" here knowing I would find danmand propagating China's propaganda.

Wow, 6 posts to try to discredit me via personal attacks. I take it you do not agree with me. Please be nice and stop the personal attacks.

For the record, I do not dislike USA at all. I lived and worked there, and some of my children are US citizens. And I do not have any love for China. You will not be able to guess which nationality my SO has.

You are drawing some very expansive (and wrong) conclusions from my post, that I believe reunification is inevitably, and that it will not involve war.

An apology would be in order
