It's been over a year since I last bought any CD's and that was a couple of older CD's at Deja-vous.

Nowadays I download my stuff from Bearshare and take it from my PC and put it onto my MP3 so that I can listen to at the gym, out on the mountain bike or at work.

I love my music and can't go the day without listening, talk about a great stress reliever.

Anybody still buying CD's. If not, how are you getting your fix. Is it through your friends, free downloads, pay per song/per album/per month downloading.......or are you still listening to your eight tracks from the seventies.....:D

CD's still exist?? Are you serious?

I haven't bought a CD in about 5 years, they're pretty much extinct. If someone were to go into a music store and buy a CD in today's world, it would be pointless. CD's today , are what cassette tapes were in the mid 1990's, i.e. gone, and never coming back.

Hey Vinny, are you telling me that cassette tapes are no longer around.

Next thing ya know, there gonna stop selling 45's and then quit making LPs...

Ditto to Vinny, I haven't bought one in.....sheesh, has to be 10 yrs or so.

Yes, cd's are going the way of vinyl, cassettes, and VHS. While they do last longer than any past technology the misnomer people have is the fact that CDs (and cdroms for that matter) are not permanant. I forget what the time frame is but they will deteriorate over time.

You still need blank CDs for car stereos (i.e. MP3 CDs).

Until they come out with totally flash-based car stereos, which I asked about in an earlier thread.

Also, CDs are still useful for archiving porno JPGs. :p

PC and console games still come out on CDs; though most, if not all, come on DVD now.

Since DVDs are essentially the same as CDs, I'd say the CD still lives on as DVD.

I use a DVD-r for both the MP3 and archiving pictures
most in car DVD players play the mp3 file from the DVD and it hold 4.7 gigs not .7 gigs like the old school cd discs

It has been about 12 years since I bought my last "pre-recorded" CD.

"pre-recorded" is actually not the correct terminology as when CD's are produced by the recording labels (ie: EMI), they are not recorded, nor are they burned

Not exactly true. Many, if not most, new car stereos come with an aux input that allows you to connect any MP3 player through the headphone jack. Now you can't scroll songs etc but it (IMO) provides the best sound for an investment of a cable worth $5.00

Even the factory radio in my F150 had aux inputs in the back for the optional cd disc jockey. There was a site that told you how to bypass some of the turn out circuits associated with this jack but I just replaced the head unit.

How about the old reel to reel recorders or 78's?

The sound quality of download files are still inferior to CD quality.
It depends on what bitrate the files are... When buying files online, I usually download files with a bitrate of 320kb/s

And cds are inferior to vinyl. (they don't have the same frequency response)

Beauty of using MP3 players in your vehicle is that you can tailor the sound output of the MP3 (volume, bass and treble) and make your factory radio sound pretty decent. I know in my F150 using factory speakers, a panasonic head unit it sounds pretty damn good considering. I tell ya, I had an S10 with 4 10" bass tubes in a 7th order cabinet, 4 8" mids, 4 6" upper mids and 2 dash mounted tweets (it hit about 135 db) and with all that stuffed into the little pickup, I'm quick happy with the setup I have now. Although I can't break windows or bounce car batteries on the roof it still sounds nice.

With all the ipods you see on the subway now, I was surprised when i saw a girl listening to an old fashioned portable cd player. How can you be satisfied with 1-2 good songs and 10 poor songs on an CD? Although no one was making fun of her, probably because she was pretty hot!:D

It's been about 2 years for me since I last bought a pre-recorded CD. I buy blank DVD's at Grand & Toy to back up my computer hard drive at monthly intervals (to protect my digital photos in case my hard drive fails). Why I stopped buying CDs is mainly because I generally only want 1 or 2 songs on the disk. Cheaper to download the song from itunes or other sites. If one wanted to buy the 10-disc set of Greatest operas of Pavarotti or something to play on a home stereo, CDs are fine. But for the odd pop song, downloading is better.

I used to think the same thing until I did an A-B comparison with a CD to an MP3 that I had been downloaded from the same CD at 128kps. I tried it on very good consumer grade equipment and could not tell the difference. Two friends, one of whom records using professional equipment, also could not tell the difference. Perhaps, a demanding classical or jazz piece would be noticable but I couldn't tell the difference with rock on consumer grade gear.
