The longer he stays in power, the more damage he does to the conservative brand.
I'm not so sure about that.

Ford's problems are very specific to what we might describe as character flaws.

It's not his conservative agenda that's creating the problems. It's his own unique approach to governing. I'm not convinced the impact on Ford's brand extends much beyond the mayor.

For example, John Tory is a conservative (sort of) and there are plenty of people in Toronto who would like to see Tory run for mayor.

Tory was hanging out at city hall yesterday and I think he is gauging support for a run.

You may be right, since Ford hasn't actually had any policies or enacted anything of import, he may be just taking himself down through the power of his own character.
Whereas Harper is slowly removing whatever shine is left from his policy base.

I'm one of those right-wing knuckle-dragger types who doesn't think Harper has much of a "policy base," either. He's much too much of an incrementalist for my liking.

Nonetheless, I would agree with you that Harper's current problems are doing more damage to the conservative brand.

Yes he will be mayor because he is too selfish to put the interests of the city ahead of his own.

Ford and Harper are night and day.

Ideologically they are both conservatives, but leave that aside as everyone has their own perspective on that.

In terms of leadership, Harper runs a tight ship, tells everyone clearly what his plan is, stays on message, maintains the support of the public, and does what he says, for the most part. His plans are thought through and developed, implemented fairly well, and communicated to the public.

Sure, if you are a lefty no doubt you hate what he says and does but in terms of effective leadership he is pretty competent. Which is not to say he hasn't fallen short a few times, but mostly he is on the ball.

Ford is just a disaster. What he says doesn't make sense, he has no plans, initiates crazy ideas out of the blue, rarely get anything done, has turned even othet conservatives against him. He never stays on message and frequently fails to provide any message at all.

Ideologically similar perhaps to Harper but completely incompetent.

I hope Tory runs.

I made a huge mistake back in 2000 or so voting for Miller over Tory, but I would never repeat that same mistake again.

I actually agree with Fuji on this. Harper is shrewd and he wants the job. Ford is a wreck who doesn't even like being mayor. A lot of standard conservatives are fed up with Ford also.

Yeah but ... the point is to win.

What if another bland uninteresting right wing candidate won't do it for people? What becomes of the conservative platform?

With Ford, the right has Ford Nation. Tory - can he rally and inspire Ford Nation. We know the answer to that.

I don't think you guys understand Ford Nation. I think I don't even understand Ford Nation. However, I think Ford National doesn't really care about politics. Shocking but true.

Lower taxes, garbage pickup, subways. Anything else is all politics, which Ford Nation is uninterested in.

To point out Ford's short-coming and failures on issues no cares about, won't cut it.

To beat Ford, the opponents must think of something new. So far, same broken record ad nauseam. LOL.

i agree- chow won't risk running
She hasn't worked in 20 years, content to suck on the public teat in relative anonymity, why would she go for a job that she might actually have to do something?

Ford is an idiot but be careful what you wish for, the remaining clowns on City Council are equally as bad, just in different ways.

I live in Chow's riding, and was in her ward before that. For the record, I have never voted for her, and never will -- I don't support the NDP.

But she has been very active in the riding, far more active than any other councilor, MPP, or MP that has ever represented me. No other councilor and no other MP I've ever had has been as visibly active in the ward/riding as she has been.

So while I respect (and somewhat agree) with your dislike of her politics, as usual you are talking nonsense.

I voted for her in 2011.

When I saw the Liberals going down in flames under Iggy, I wanted to do my part to help bury them. I thought of it as strategic voting, rather than supporting the NDP.
