The HD boxes are expensive? I got my HDPVR for free through rogers. Now I pay extra for HD TMN etc and that gives me all the regular "broadcast" channels in HD also (PBS/CBC/GLOBAL etc). I think HD costs me an extra $20.00 a month.

Rogers must be pretty good then. I used to live in Vancouver, and I had to go with Shaw because of the internet bundle. The regular HD box is about $350, and a PVR is $650. That's more than half the price of the TV. I'm not sure how much more it would've cost me, but the high prices of the boxes prevented me from completely switching right away.

First off it's only 720P not a full 1080P. Which means if you ever get a Blu Ray disc player it will down convert it and you won't get the full rez. In addition, if anyone starts offerring full HD service, you are shit outta luck.

Don't be confused with a unit's ability to receive a 1080 signal. That doesn't mean it can output the signal. Just about every LCD or Plasma can receive them, but only a true 1080 unit can reproduce them on the screen.

ANother thing I'd look into is the contrast ratio. The higher the better and I wouldn't even think of buying one with less than 10,000:1.

Yeah I saw those specs and I am wondering why they don't have the contrast ratio listed. This is one of the main concerns with flat panel TVs (whether they are plasma or lcd). I would be very suspectful of why they don't show it on their spec sheets. Is it so bad they don't want to advertise it? I mean, every other spec sheet on any flat panel TV (or monitor) I ever looked at has it listed plain as day.....

Frankly, I'd spend $100.00 more and buy a 1080 version.

by law HD starts at 720 but it is useless. Never ever buy unless it is 1080p. Some adv at 1080i but it not the same as 1080p. Soon they will be even higher. Next thing you should look at is the mhz. Most are at 60 but the one you should get now ia 120 mhz. Yes contrast should be higher but if you don't have a large room and you are pretty close to the tv then its not as important as what i just mentioned. By the way the new 2008 model Toshiba is one of the best. Sharp has not done a great job on their newer models.
Just things I have picked up and hope this helps.

LOL I think you mean unanimous lol....but then again, our advice is anonymous so you're partly right.

As Inc said: a faster refresh rate (mhz) is best but I disagree with his contrast comment. I feel that contrast is important no matter the lighting in the room or how close you sit. I personally would like my blacks to be black and my whites to be white.

The difference between 1080i and 1080p is that with 1080i, only half the lines are refreshed with each cycle, 1080p all the lines are.

Now someone can correct me if I'm wrong on this, but 60 mhz is indicative as to how many times or how fast the screen is "scanned" or the image changes. 120 mhz means that the image is "scanned" twice as often in the same amount of time...is that right?

I will say this: I get a boner everytime I turn on my panni plasma. I mean, I sit there in awe with drool coming off my bottom lip when I'm watching something in HD. I mean, I was watching something this weekend and it was almost 3 dimensional. I heard that a good HD image is like looking out a window and that's what this was like. It was almost as if I could lean forward and look behind the window frame to see more of the image on the screen.....and this is all at 720p, I'll have an orgasm when everything switches to 1080.....and I can't wait to get an HD dvd player.....

Honestly, I think the only thing that could possibly more visually stimulating would be if Jennifer Aniston was sitting on my TV stand naked with her legs spread.....I'd be like mamamamamamanananannenenen doaoh ahahd d alll
