I have always considered my birthday as New Years Day, and I don't give a shit about my birthday.
NYE has never made sense to me.

Never been that big of a fan.

Always this pressure or expectation perhaps to have the best time of your life.

Plus, dead of winter. Never conducive to having a good time in my opinion.

I like New years eve its a time for my friends, family and I to get together and talk about what we enjoyed in the current year and what we look forward to in the new year. Its just nice..even if people party and get drunk. Its just nice to countdown to the new year and celebrate together ^-^

I grew up with my parents hosting parties and it was honestly so fun and such a big highlight of my childhood ^-^

Calling any holiday dumbest is dumb.

Every holiday is just a day. What it means to an individual will vary based on nationality, race, creed, upbringing, traditions etc.

Why would anybody complain about a day with extra pay/time off with pay etc...there is no down side.

I don't think it is dumb even though I never celebrated it. Many people use it to try to turn over a new leaf etc, which probably rarely happens. Odd you bring it up as how many times have you heard it said 2020 was an awful year.

Our whole lives are based on time of some sort, same with new years.

and what's with the countdown? It's almost like good riddance celebration. I suppose for 2020 more so.

Obviously, New Year's Eve is going to be quiet this year. But even pre-covid I never really understood the point of it. It seemed like just an excuse to get drunk. What exactly are we celebrating as the calendar turns over to January?
I can celebrate 11:59-12:00 any day of the week

New year's day should not be a holiday, imo. We just started a new year and we need a fucking day off??!!

There is cause for celebration, 2020 is over! The year sucked major cock, let's hope 2021 has less vacuum.

The lamest holiday is Valentine's Day. What's wrong with the other 364 to show your So your love by washing your ass.

A day is just an arbitrary and relative sequence of time that we invented. For whatever reason, we decided to structure time in a repeating pattern even though there's no logical reason for doing it. The only reason we celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, etc. is to remind ourselves of the passage of time.

There would be no reason to celebrate holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. if the calendar started from 0 date and time and never repeated.

I like Chinese New Year's better.
I am not Asian but find myself following the Chinese New year more. Since following a Lunar Calendar was more commonplace in Ancient times before the Romans. Also that's when I find the real theme of the year takes place.

Whereas I would find in the past I would make New years resolutions for the Solar year. And around the January / February timeframe something would happen out of my control that would dictact the theme of the year. And I would find myself responding to that framework.

Same thing happened for 2020 that around Lunar New Year the concerns about Covid was growing in Asia. Hence later on the year all plans were under that framework.

So I expect the same for this upcoming year of the Ox which hopefully means a recovery from where we have been in 2020.

There always has to be an ending and starting point of the old and the new. What is wrong with celebrating this each year (plus I like being paid on a statutory holiday) Personally, I had the best time in years last night and today. Celebrated with a couple of people at my place and with six others for three hours via zoom.

I think a lot of people get post xmas blues, you're broke, spent too much time with family, winter sucks... etc etc, it is a way to blow off steam and have some fun. Imho.
