Brett Favre threw his 420th touchdown pass to tie Dan Marino's record and has now got the Packers to a 3-0 start .. 58,000 + career yards .. His numbers keep adding up and so I ask does his ranking ( best all-time ) go up too ..

I thought he already was universally accepted as top 5-ish?

From who i have seen in my lifetime, I'd rank them:

1. Joe Montana
2. John Elway
3. Tom Brady (although he might be #1 by the end of the season)
4. Peyton Manning (another Super Bowl and I might put him there too. Best pure passer of all time.)
5 (a) Brett Favre
5 (b) Dan Marino

With apologies to Troy Aikman and maybe Dan Fouts too. I don't think I'm forgetting anyone...

Yeah, I feel bad about keeping Aikman out of the top five, but I just can't put him ahead of any of the others I listed.

Definitely a top 5, followed by Marino, Steve Young, Bart Starr, Aikman, Namath, Kelly, Staubach, Unitas...the list can go on. But here is my top 5:

1. Montana
2. Elway
3. Bradshaw
4. Favre
5. Brady

Manning still has stuff to prove. Consistency.

Jim Kelly 4 superbowls .. 81 completions in superbowls are second only to Joe Montana .... Steve Young ...

I agree ... Tom Brady stock keeps going up ...
I think Jim Kelly was great, top 10 for sure, and four Super Bowl appearances is amazing, but I just can't put him ahead of anyone I mentioned, maybe ahead of Fouts in the 6-8 range, but can't take out any of my top 5 and put Kelly there.
Sure, the Bills faced the powerhouse Cowboys who would've beat anyone and the 49ers who were the second best team in the NFL during that time except that they couldn't beat the Cowboys (until that year), but Jim Kelly got beat by a back-up QB in Jeff Hostetler. For that reason I can't make him top 5.
I know Marino only got to the Super Bowl once, but he was the better passer and I think the Bills teams Kelly had were better than any team Marino ever had.

And the completions stat is overrated: Other than the Giants game, every one of the SuperBowls was a blowout in which the Bills were playing catch-up and passing a lot.

Of course!!!

You could make a VERY, VERY strong argument that he is the best off all time...top of the list....

I really like Brett Farvre, but I don't think i can put him up in the top 5. Maybe this season he either gets the packers deep in the playoff or wins the super bowl i would put him in the top 5. Same thought goes for Peyton Manning, one more super bowl and for sure top 5. My reason is that best find ways to win the big one not just once but two or more times and shows people that they are the real deal in leadership, performance, and the ability to win. Tom Brady has shown all of these and that is why he would always be on peoples top 5. just my thinking...

...but given the complexity of football (not just the "game", but the sport), I think it is pretty harsh to lay it all on one man's shoulders.

Marino never one a Super Bowl, but is very, very, VERY arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. Are you saying his failure to do so was his fault, versus his never having a consistent running game and top notch defense at the same time?

Elway got his team to the Super Bowl 5 times...are you saying if he doesn't finally win one he isn't amongst the greatest of all time? I think you'd be alone in the opinion...but if you do not have that perspective (giving Elway "credit" for hi multiple appearances), then does that mean the statistically superior Jim Kelly is just as good? What about Fran Tarkenton?

A quarterback can only play the cards dealt him...and those cards are dealt by the General Manager...and shuffled by the Head Coach....

It is almost universally agreed that quarterbacks get too much credits for success, and too much blame for failures...with that in mind, yes, I think a guy who gets to the big game deserves some praise...but I can't hold it against a guy who does not...

...who don't get NEARLY the pub as other guys

Steve Young - He has the highest career quarterback rating of all time...and won a Super Bowl...and was a first ballot Hall Of Famer

Dan Fouts - Some consider him, along with Marino, the greatest pure "passers" of all time, and the two best QBs to never win a Super Bowl. Also a HOF guy.

Jim Kelly - Hall Of Fame QB with 4 Super Bowl appearances and career passing rating in the top 20 of all time.

Bradshaw made one person's top 5 list, but IMHO all 5 i listed are better.

Not saying Bradshaw sucked AT ALL...but I think he benefited more than any of the greats from playing with a great team.

I mean...how many players from those great 70's Steelers teams ended up in the Hall Of Fame? He played with 4 on offensive ALONE...plus playing for a HOF coach....

I mean really...and if you know your football you will understand this question...was Terry Bradshaw REALLY any better than Bert Jones...or did he just have better teammates?

Randall Cunningham?

The others were before my time, so I really can't comment, but Randall Cunningham wouldn't even be considered in my top 10, probably not even top 15.

He was a great scrambler and made average Eagles teams decent...but no way is he top 5.

...and certainly better than NFL teams thought he would be.

But...probably not in the same league as the guys mentioned here...just a cut below. No rings...no MVP awards. But damn good. Really...really good. Probably was only lacking better surrounding talent.

Warren Moon paved the way for black quarterbacks in the NFL.

Remember no one would draft him and he had to go into the CFL and he won 5 straight Grey Cups during his prime ... imagine if the racism did not exist and he was allowed to play on an even field. He fought adversity that the majority of the QBs listed above have never experienced and he still succeeded. I believe that he deserves more than many give him. Funny how 30 years later a guy with his talent would be grabbed up within the few first picks.

Okay now how about Johnny Unitas or Bart Starr ?

My only wish is, that when Favre breaks the record -he'll be scrambling, out of the pocket, throwing against his body or off the back of his foot, whistling a ball thrown so hard it actually resonates an audible sound, into triple coverage to Driver. That would be a fitting moment.
