to get a wireless connection from a hotel room without a wireless card??? I'm so confused. As you may already know, i'm coming up to Toronto tomorrow. I just booked my hotel and it said that they have a complimentary wireless connection. I call them up to ask how it works and the lady said that i need a wireless card and they'll give me a pin number. Ummm ya, i don't have a card. I guess this laptop is old school or something. It's a IBM Thinkpad. My sister has a rowder (sp?) on her laptop and i guess mine just picks up from hers in the house. So does that mean that i shouldn't even bother packing my laptop for tomorrow?

Thanks for your help. I'm so clueless when it comes to technology.

ROUTER you mean?
you do not need a router some hotles may have a cable you can plug into as well as wireless
the Key word there is some

The wire should look like a big phone jack on your Laptop

Not all lap tops have the jacks in the same places

To the right of this image is a Two PCMCIA( one ontop of each other );-)
in the middle you will see a phone jack to the right of that a Network Jack but not all Hotels motels have this infact most do not

Ya i asked her about a guest pc and she said there wasn't one. She only mentioned the card that i should have and that they'd give me a pin number. She said that she wasn't too sure if there was any other way and informed me to just inquire once i check in about a "tech guy". I guess i'll just have to do that. It's gonna be tough with no internet access and a phone that only accepts messages. I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this. Actually, there's an internet cafe right by that hotel if i recall correctly.

Thanks for your help guys.

Hi Areil

You don't need a router...

Here's your choices...

Dialup...
This goes through the hotel's switchboard and is quite slow. You'll need an isp dialup access number in the city where you are going. If you are going to set this up, you'll need to make sure you put the dial tone access number, usually "9" in the front of the telephone number first.

I suspect this is probably the least likely way you'll get connected, but I did it myself when I was in Sault Ste Marie.

Wired network.
Check in the room and see if there is a plug in that has a port for this, The socket will look like a telephone socket, but it will be a bit bigger. If they have wired network in the hotel, all you'll need is the connecting cable, which you should be able to pick up at any computer store real cheaply.

Just phone the hotel and see if they have internet wired into the rooms. If its only Wireless, then the next option is...

WIFI
This is wireless network and you would either use the internal WIFI adapter already in your laptop, or you could get a slot card, as mentioned above and stick it in the slot of your laptop.

I also have an old IBM Think Pad and it works fine, once you know how to configure everything.

Hope this helps. I wish I was able to come and get it all working for you.. who knows what trouble we'd get into? :)

Hmmmm. I just re-read your original message and you said you are "picking up" internet from your sister's router.

If that's correct, I think you may already have a WIFI adapter in your laptop. So, take it along and see what happens. You find it works very well!

Good luck!

I have been in too many Hotels /Motels without a cat five connection ( wire connection) they just have Wireless available some have no courtesy PC and if they do some knob is hogging it. If you in Toronto you will be five or six steps away from a computer store and they should stock a wireless card that is compatible with your systems for much less then cost of a pair of shoes

In Windows, go to:

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections

How many icons do you see? You should see at least one for the wired connection ("Local Area Connection"). If this is the only icon you see, you'll need to get a network cable or get a wireless card, assuming that the laptop has a PCMCIA slot.

You may see another one for "Wireless Network Connection." If that icon is there, then you're all set. Shortly after you start up windows, you'll see a pop-up that says wireless connections available. Just click on that balloon, select one of the available connections and click "Connect".

If your laptop has internet in your sister's house, it must have wireless built in and it should have no problem connecting in the hotel.

My thoughts exactly. If are picking up a signal from your sister, your computer has built-in wireless. The hotdel likely also has a cable connection and there is a port on your computer where you can plug in.

Good luck!

First of all, wtf is with the spelling in this thread? Everyone take their dumb pills or what lol. Hotdel, hotle, rowder, sheesh....

And yeah, if she's already using her sister's net access without hard wiring it using a CAT5 cable, then she's good to go.

When she powers up her laptop at the hotel, and clicks on connect to the internet, the secret code they give her should get her online.

As for a cellphone that only receives messages, last I heard many hotels are also now offerring this antiquated technology called, ahem, a LAND line...you know, those old things that sit on a horizontal surface and have buttons and a handset that is attached using a curly cord?

If you are picking up a signal at your sisters house, then you have a wireless card and will likely also pick up a signal at the hotel.

On the bright side, Ariel, at least you're pretty :p

Thanks for your help guys :)

tboy....hmmmmm you must be bored this morning, or did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? I wouldn't talk about spelling when your grammer is off. (sister's....should be sisters, i don't think your meaning to say "sister is".... :p)

Ask me about shoes, hair or make up and i'll have you all sounding "dumb". And yes, at least i am pretty, lol....

p.s. If i am unable to get a signal and people don't leave me their number on my machine then it's a little hard for me to work that "antiquated technology" thingy that sits on a "horizontal surface" with that really creepy "curly cord" ;-)

See ya soon :)

Actually ariel: sister's with the apostrophy indicates ownership NOT sister is......as in "is that coffee your's or mine"?? or another example "that car is my brother's".

And no, I didn't wake up on the wrong side of the bed, I just have a "thing" for poor spelling, grammar etc.

As for shoes, hair and makeup. Give it your best shot: I know a bit about foundation, blush, blending, eyebrow pencils, eyeliner, mascara, concealers, dyes, straighteners, curlers, conditioners (perm and non-perm), how to dye hair, how to streak, etc etc etc. As for shoes: flats, pumps, cfms, stilletos, manolos, chungs, strappy sandals, etc etc.

So yeah, I can help a lady choose a pair but I wouldn't know who made them unless I turned them over.

The right grammar would actually be "is that coffee yours or mine"

There is no such word as "your's". There is "yours", "his", "hers", "ours", "mine" and "theirs"

And it's not "apostrophy" it is "apostrophe"

You are wrong there too, "sister's" is the equivalant of "sister is". To indicate ownership, depending on how you use it in a sentence, you would spell it simply "sisters" or "sisters' "

And to get on topic Ariel, if you are picking up internet and never plugged anything into your computer then you have a built in wireless card.

Actually, Tboy was correct to say sister's as in "her sister's net access" although his explanation of why he used it was flawed...

Sister's does not only mean 'sister is' but it is also the correct possessive form of sister. (Compare John's car - the apostrophe in this case does not replace an 'i' as in John is car. You would not say Johns car.)

To say sisters' with the apostrophe at the very end implies that there are two or more sisters which would be incorrect in this case.
