Evidently Jays are close to a trade with the Mets for R.A. Dickey. Supposedly Travis D'Arnaud going the other way.

Alex always says that if you hear a rumour about the Jays, it's probably not going to happen.

I have mixed feelings. Solid but older pitcher for a guy the Jays have been promoting big time as a future star almost ready for the bigs. Being a knuckleballer, Dickey can pitch for more years than a conventional pitcher.

Dickey is one year away from free agency. I hope we do not trade for him unless a signed contract extension is part of the plan.

I agree. If D'Arnaud is part of it, I say no. A 37 year old free agent to be, with one truly great season and a couple of decent ones on his resume doesn't interest me if the cost is your top prospect.

I hope it's not true.

Quite a few rumours out there, including those posted on here and multi players from both sides.
AA usually has his cards so close to his vest that there is no hint anything is happening until the deal is done.
I'm starting to think this is media driven.

I think it depends on what AA's game plan is. Does he want to go for the whole enchilada this year (or next) or build as strong a team as possible for the longer (no such thing as long nowadays) stretch.

I think giving up D'Arnaud and Gose is too much long term. Both can be stars for a long time, although, as I said before, a knuckleballer can pitch longer and an extension forDickey could be a contingency on the deal being done.

I can see giving up one of D'Arnaud and Gose and give them Lind and maybe another throw-in (decent younger prospect). They still have lots of young arms. Give them Drabek. Cy Young winner, but 38, but a knuckleballer. They can get him for around $12-13 million per year.

Somewhere but not here.

If we have to give up D'Arnaud and Gose I'd rather add a couple others to it and try get Halliday back from Philly.

Damn I really wish we can trade JPA instead of D'Arnaud. I hope Jays know we are trading for a 38 year old dickey for a prime prospect. Nothing beats the Marlins deal we had :)

Perhaps we need to add a few bad contracts such as John Buck and Adam Lind to the deal. Would like to get Ike Davis back.

Here
Deal make no sense unless Dickey agrees to an extension, and I can't see AA paying him the kind of money he is asking for...

I also don't know if AA is prepared to part with so much future talent on this and the Miami deals. But I am sure that the BJ's brass has a much better handle on what their farm system has in reserve and this deal would solidify the team for the next 2 or 3 years while that farm talent develops.

No doubt, the BJ's are long on catching right now... and I recall hearing that they are very high on A. J. Jimenez, who seems to be about 2 years away...

And, of course, they have plenty of young pitching talent with Jenkins and Loup on hand, Hutchison, Drabek and Perez on the mend, and the likes of Sanchez, Norris, Stroman and McGuire down in the farm...

The teams have an agreement in principle, the Blue Jays have until 2 p.m. Tuesday to sign Dickey to an extension.

For the next three seasons, (presuming R.A. signs) Toronto wins the deal.
If d'Arnaud turns into Bench or Posey, long term the Mets do.

Look at it like a David Cone for Jeff Kent situation. That worked out for all concerned.

Seriously who is the best catcher in the Majors right now? I really have no idea. sure a catcher is important but Id say a pitcher WAYYYYY more so. Catchers are more a dime a dozen. Sure some way better than others. That being said, it makes no sense to sign him unless the extension is part of it. I say do it. Gcostanza mentions Bench as a comparison but really we have to go that far back to find a seriously impact catcher? Do the deal (with an extension)

If you're going back to Bench, you're only using the best catcher, arguably, of all time. That may be setting the standards a bit high.

Fisk, Carter, Rodriguez, Posey, Mauer, Piazza are/were all impactful not to mention the significance of handling a pitching staff.

I wouldn't underestimate the importance of catcher.

I'm going to say Buster Posey

With all the moves that AA has made thus far, they have to go for it now. As much as they are selling the farm a bit to get Dickey, if this is the last hump to get them into the post season and compete for the World Series then it'll all be worth it. Prospects are prospects. Sure some will turn into gems but it can take years. Who knows how many more prime years they'll get out of Bautista & Encarnacion. How will Reyes's knees hold up on turf in the long run? They have the pieces and the time is now to go for it.

That I agree! But, I just thought maybe we could have traded for someone younger. James Shields comes to mind, who's now with the royals.

It's sort of like when we got 2 top prospects from the Phillies, Halladay was only 32-33 years old.

Knuckleballers have a longer shelf life though, plus pitching in a dome stadium will also help. Just have to make sure we have a catcher who can actually catch Dickey!

I didnt go back to Bench someone else did. I dont under estimate the importance of a good catcher but compared to a Cy Young winners impact? I dont think its close.
