Yeah Don leaves you shaking your head at times. I knew he wouldn't mention anything about Brendan Witt's 5 game suspension because he's a fan of his. Also he criticizes Ovechkin, saying he showboats and he's going to "get it one day".

He just babbles way too much sometimes...

What makes you say he's a bigot?
Taken from wikipedia:
Political views and controversy

Over his career on television, Cherry has generated significant controversy about both hockey and politics. In 1992, he referred to Finnish born Winnipeg Jets Assistant Coach Alpo Suhonen as "some kind of dog food", which triggered a threat of a law suit from Jets owner Barry Shenkarow. In January 2004, on the subject of visors, Cherry said on Coach's Corner: "Most of the guys that wear them are Europeans and French guys." This statement triggered an investigation by the federal Official Languages Commissioner, and protests by French-Canadians. CBC consequently imposed a seven-second delay on Hockey Night in Canada. He was somewhat vindicated when a study was published that showed the majority of visor users in the NHL were indeed French-Canadians and Europeans.

In 2003 Cherry made controversial comments on his CBC segment in support of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Cherry appeared on the American radio program The Jim Rome Show the following week, stating, "You have to realize the CBC is government owned [...] You have to say the government was against [the invasion of Iraq] and I'm for it and I'm on a government program. I really thought this could be the end."

After appearing in the Canadian House of Commons on November 7, 2006, he formally stated his support for the Prime Minister, whom he called "a grinder and a mucker" by saying "I give a thumbs up to Stephen Harper for sure. He supports the troops and I support the troops."

Not to mention, he constantly disregards many players for simply being 'non-Canadian'. I'm a patriotic as the next guy, and support my country (especially in sports... even though we second tier in most), but I don't pause to recognize, and embrace, players who are non-Canadian.

Bigot? Not really. Politically correct? Not in the slightest.

We make the mistake these days to confuse noting differences with being racist or biggoted. Grapes just says it like we would have said it 20 years ago, when we were still allowed to notice things like color of skin, heritage, background, ethnic background, etc. Now we all walk around acting like everyone is some sort of neutral grey with no heritage.

It sort of sucks.

Just because it was 'okay' twenty years ago makes it okay? This is exactly why I say that racism/bigotry/prejudice (yes, I know the difference between the three terms I used) has not come as far as some think it has; and why it will not end (at least in our lifetimes).

Well obviously you don't know the difference, you opened this thread with your opinion that he's a bigot because he openly states he isn't a fan of european hockey players and openly states his feelings.

It is still 100% OK to notice someone's race/creed/religion, it is 100% ok to discuss someone's race/creed/religion and it's still 100% ok to discuss anything to do with anyone's race/creed/religion as long as it isn't hate related. But in today's society if you even mention someone's race/creed/religion someone plays the bigot or racist card.

He did have a point tonight about the leafs having the oppurtunity to get that ONTARIO goalie and turned him down in favour of Toscala. Is he wrong? Not in the least. The leafs DID turn him down in favour of a european player that is now developing hip problems.

As for ovechkin's antics, he's 100% correct, there is such a thing as class and I'm sorry, he is definitely lacking it.....

Here's mine: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bigot

What's yours??

The fact that it is still okay to acknowledge the difference is why I say that removing racism/prejudice/bigotry is still a far away idea, and that it is still very prevalent in society.

To mention specific players is not what I did. I mentioned one quote to back partially back up my original post. There are many more questionable things that Cherry has said that support my position.

I originally said 'discuss' because I wanted to as a question and see what others said; so I'm gonna back out of this discussion and read what others say. I respect your opinions and am just trying to measure whether my thinking is part of the majority or minority.

I wouldn't say he hates the european players, maybe just doesn't like their style of play very strongly and prefers Canadian Players.......but then again, that is prejudiced.....anytime a white person states that he prefers something, it's considered bigotry/racism/prejudice. If he was black, or swedish, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Well said. I recall Cherry had a liking for Forsberg. Loved his style of play. If he were a bigot he would be a bigot accross the board.

Cherry was on a "european" rant this evening essentially trying to make the point that Detroit with a number of skilled europeans plays a non hitting style and is a boring team hence lower atttendance than in the past days of Kocur and Probert. His argument was that their style was "boring" compared to teams with less europeans on the roster.
Don does not appeal to the leftest/socialists who disagree with his politics and views which is understandable. Many people tune in for his insights and views as well as to see him implode on a regular basis.
I personally applaud him for his contrbutions to minor hockey, his flat out support for the active troops we have overseas, his respectfull salute to the fallen troops and law enforcement officers who have died in service.
Bigot? Nope! Opinionated absolutely!
