I have an old iPod from around 2004. It's one of the big 80 GB models.

The battery still seems to charge fine (I can normally get 3-5 hours out of it before needed to charge) but lately I've noticed it "hangs" when switching between songs. It seems to get progressively worse the longer it is turned on.

Maybe the battery is going (it is 5 years old, afterall). If so, is there a way to replace the battery? Isn't there a shop in downtown Toronto that specializes in iPod repairs?

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Save the music on your desktop, re-set the unit, and then re-load the music and see if that helps.

You can try these guys out:

http://ishoprepair.3dcartstores.com/Contact-Us_ep_42-1.html

Or just take it into your local Apple store (Fairview Mall, Eaton Centre, Sherway Gardens or Yorkdale Mall). As far as I know, you can leave it with them and they'll replace your battery for you, at a reasonable charge.

Once you get a new battery, it should work as good as new. Bandit is right though, in that you should do a reset on it, wipe it clean, and start fresh. I'm assuming that you have all of the music/content on iTunes, so it wouldn't be too costly, other than some time in doing it.

Good luck!

There's also these guys; http://irepair.ca/

I always thought if you brought it to the Apple Store they would swap it with a new unit at a discounted price?
I didn't know they replace the batteries themselves. That's good to know.

Since we are on the topic of iPods, can someone recommend an app that can rip a movie dvd or tv show dvd to the ipod in the least amount of time?

IpodRobot works well for me.

When I plug my iPod into my computer it endlessly loads with the do not disconnect message and doesn't appear in iTunes. I have the most up to date iTunes and I'm wondering if there is something fucked with my iPod.

Is there a manual way to erase the iPod? The only way I've found online is via iTunes (which I can't get to).

This is such a pain in the ass. I get a message in iTunes that my iPod is corrupted but iTunes won't recognize it so I can't restore it. ARGHHHHHHH!!!

Why the fuck isn't there a manual format option on the iPod so you don't need bloody iTunes!?!?!?!

Its the begiining of the end

I had the exact same issue
Hard drive is failing
Reseting works for a while but eventually just crapped out
It can be fixed but the cost made buying a new one a no brainer

I took it to iRepair and they said it could be either the hard drive or the circuit board. Each cost $70 and the battery is due to die soon too so I said I'll pass and just buy a new one.

Do iPods ever go on sale or should I just buy one now? I'm looking at either a 16 GB Nano for $199 or a 120 GB Classic for $259. For an extra $60 I can get more than 6x the space. Is that a no-brainer?

If you're willing to spend $259, I'd go with the iPod Touch. Yes, it has less storage space (although 8 gigs is a good amount of space....that's alot of music), but you also get a portable computer with wifi, email, web browsing, and access to over 50,000 apps, many of them free! I love my Touch, and would not trade it for a larger capacity iPod anytime! You sacrifice storage space, but you get a whole lot more! And OS 3.0 is coming out very soon, which promises a bunch of new features.

For $329, you get 16 gigs, which doubles your storage space. I have a weblink to an Apple store corporate discount site (you have to order online to get the discount). The corporate discounted price would be $309 for the 16 gig Touch, and $243 for the 8 gig.

This is the Apple online store, with discounted prices for employees of select companies (Free shipping!). PM me if you'd like this link, as I won't post it publicly.

Cheers :)

Finally moved into the 21st century and got an 8 GB nano. Thought I was supposed to get 2,000 songs on it, but only got half that. What am I doing wrong??

The bit rate that you encoded your songs is likely above 128bit. As well, look at the length of the songs. I believe Apple does it's calculations based on a low bit rate encoding of 128kbps(Cd Quality is 192kbps), and an average song length of 3 minutes.

But what's the monthly fee like?

There is no monthly fee....this is the iPod Touch, not the iPhone. It is the same as the iPhone, without the phone, camera, and monthly fees. It uses the same operating system, and can use almost all of the same apps. There are a few apps that are designed specifically for the iPhone's data access capabilities, but I'd say 98% of them work on both devices. Lots of great games, utilities, and business apps to play with! Data access can be done with wifi, and email is awesome on it (there is no additional cost for this, but is only available through wifi), especially handy when you're out and are able to access a wifi hotspot (ie. Starbucks).

Go try it out. I have a classic but my friends that have Touch just love it's screen ( to show photos ) and OS. It's a fun piece of gear if you have room for another tech gadget.

It's so much more than just an iPod. It's all about the apps! Check out the app store on iTunes. You'll be amazed what you find there!

It's literally a pocket computer....Apple's version of a Netbook, except it fits in the palm of your hand! And it costs about the same as an iPod, with lower storage space compared to a Classic.
